Show Nows the Time T o Prepare Boat for Year This is the time of year when boat owners are loginning a summer season of fun and enjoyment preparations for on the water. And, in getting ready for the coming season, its a good idea to make certain that you have all the proper safety equipment for an enjoyable year. The first thing you should do to prepare your boat is to remove all unattached equipment and paraphanalia from the craft for inspection, cleaning and replacement or repair, if appropriate. Required equipment includes U.S. Coast Guard approved personal floatation devices (life jackets) for each person on board, or being towed. Boats should also have one Coast Guard approved throwable device either a buoyant cushion or a ring buoy. A Coast d fire extinguisher for marine use is required on all motor boats except outboards under 26 feet of open contruction. Boats should also have a bail bucket or hand operated bilge pump, a paddle, anchor and adequate line and a horn or whistle. Recommended equipment includes items like spare props, spark plugs, drain plugs, fuses, tools, tow line, first aid kit, boat hook, boarding ladder, fenders, mooring line, flashlight, distress flag and flares and extra food and water for long boating adventures. Boats which will be operated after sunset should have navigation lights. And, be sure to register your craft with the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation for the 1978 season.
