Show Drilling In Utah Most Productive Since 1965 The year pa!t was a good Utahs oil and gas industry. The year coming will be a good one, too, says Carlton Stowe, minerals specialist for the Utah Department of Natural Resources. At the turn of the year, there were some 120 locations on file waiting to be drilled. Some 50 wells were at total depth and were in some stage of being completed. Drilling Rig Count During the year past the drilling rig count averaged between 28 and 30 near a third to a half better than in the previous year. Drilling in 1977 accounted for 14 new wildcat discoveries, more than in any previous year since 1965 when there were 16 new discoveries. Three times as many gas well discoveries were made as had been recorded in any of the past few years. Eight of the discoveries last year were gas producers. One is considered to be the most significant in Utah in a decade. Discover 6 Wells Six oil wells were discovered. production. By comparison, only 35 wildcats were drilled the year before. Total wells drilled in the state soared to 281 well over the last high count of 214 w ells drilled in 1963. 104 Dry Holes Of these, 131 were oil wells, 46 were a gas wells and 104 ended up as dry one for By comparison, drilling the year before accounted for only one small oil field discovery. To get the 14 new discoveries, the oil and gas companies drilled holes." In the Greater area Altamont-Bluebe- ll of Duchesne and Uintah counties, there are now 350 producing and operators have wells now scheduled five more 11,000 to t tests. South of Vernal, in the Natural Buttes vicinity, new gas wells completed recently bring that fields total producing wells up to 85. Various Stages Another 20 wells are in various stages of final completion, and another 23 locations are being readied for drilling. Chevrons activities in the Red Wash field also are steady with new wells scheduled. New producing wells in Summit Countys Pineview field brought total wells there to 17 by years end. Grand County oil and gas drilling also was active. December reports indicated 28 exploratory wells were 13,000-foo- ' scheduled. Twenty-threfield development wells were being prepared for 90 wildcat wells which are drilled remotely from known e drilling, and six wells were in final stages of completion.
