Show Does This Hand Know What Others Doing? A Washington physician has conceived means for a person to write something with his or her right hand and see it displayed on a computer readout attached like a wristwatch to the left forearm. The writing might be a check, which the computer would deduct from the bank balance in its memory. The Newspaper Agency Calls Us Cattle graze empty reaches of north Utah Auction prices are little higher when they need service and repair than they were 25 years ago, forcing ranch-rangers into heavy borrowing to survive. e. You Should Too! New and Used Equipment They Serve As Example Authorized Service Station and Parts For: Ranchers Survive Hardships Industry as a whole could well consider the model of the beef cattle industry. The U.S. economy would be the better, says Dr. John Butcher, of the Utah State University College of Agriculture. Consider: In 1951, the rancher was getting $28.70 a hundred years later, the pounds for his beef animals. Twenty-fiv- e price to the rancher was $33.70 a hundredweight, only 17 percent more. During the same time, the U.S. population increased from 154 million to 214.7 million. And average beef consumption increased from 56 pounds a person to nearly 129 pounds in 1976. Success Story It seems we have one of the greatest success stories in agriculture. Consumption of beef moved from 8.6 billion pounds in 1951 to 27.65 billion pounds in 1976, an increase of 220 percent," says Dr. Butcher. The only increase in price of live beef sold by the farmer or rancher was 17 percent, he adds. This is an outstanding success story. There is no other large enterprise that has so successfully shown the application of the free enterprise principles in the past 25 years. There are several reasons for the beef industrys success, says Dr. Butcher. Among them, of course is increased efficiency. However, part of it is related to the inflated price of which has which is collateral for bank loans land helped many to stay in beef production, even though their return for the past four years has been more than eaten up by higher cost of production. While live beef is selling at only 17 percent more than it was 25 years ago, the cattle industry faces costs which have more than doubled in the same period. In addition to vicious inflation, those in agriculture also confront more problems occasioned by requirements of such agencies as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration, he says. If the public does not recognize the free enterprise contribution of the beef cattle industry in the United States and support this industry, not only for its own value but as an example of what can be done in all industries, our nation will continue to suffer an adverse economic Dr. Butcher position, nationally and internationally, says. The impact could be enormous. Agriculture, notes Dr. Butcher, is the largest industry in the United States and in the world. And he says it certainly is the most important. People have to eat before they are effective in doing anything else. The industrialzied nations of the world first had to become efficient in food production or acquisition in order to divert a significant portion of their work force to industries other than agriculture.
