By summertime, Eli was more than ready to head up to Salt Lake City to join other animals from around the state showcased in Furburbia, the new adoption center at Cottonwood Mall. Furburbia is a key component of No More Homeless Pets in Utah, a campaign to end the killing of shelter animals in the state by 2005. The NMHP in Utah staff includes Kate Schnepel who helped renovate and launch the retail space for Furburbia. When Kate met Eli, she fell in love with his mellow nature and expressive eyes. Kate decided Eli would be the perfect dog for her folks, Anne Richardson and John Goodell, who had just retired to Kanab from California. It happened they were coming up to Salt Lake the weekend that Eli was up for adoption at Furburbia. Anne and John agreed to check out the sweetfaced hound Kate was so high on. Just minutes after Anne and John arrived at Furburbia, a young couple adopted Eli. We had mixed feelings, Kate says. Both glad he had a home and ft sad that he wasnt going to be part of our family. As it turned out, Eli and the couples other dog didnt get head up NMHP in Utah, flew Eli from Salt Lake to Kanab. His new people met him at the airport with toys and treats in hand. Then it was off to his home in the Ranchos with Anne, a former deputy district attorney in Imperial County, and John, a California public administration office retiree who recently joined the Best Friends maintenance staff. It didnt take long for Eli to realize that - after some rough going - he had hit upon happy trails, at last. His people slip him goodies from the dinner table and take him on outdoors adventures like wading in the Virgin River -- at Zion. Weve both quit tobacco and were turning into couch potatoes, says Anne, the new face behind the counter at Willow Creek Books. With Eli around, were hiking more. He loves to go on walks in the Ranchos, up Squaw Trail and on the Kaibab. Eli is also a happy passenger in Anne and Johns Bronco. He likes to ride with his head out the window, Anne says. We went by a field with cows and he sniffed atthem and thought that was the coolest thing in the world. Three for the Road has a nice ring, doesnt it? Says John: We love Eli very much. ft ! non-prof- 643-678- 1 'V' O' 84 Enter the Pumpkin Contest Get your ready!
