Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 25, 2000 News Report wildlife Halloween safety tips My mind has been blank for two weeks. Now some would say that this condition is much more serious than that. Oh well, back to the point of this endeavor. I went through past tips stored on the trusty computer; lo and behold people have not been heeding my advice. Can you imagine that? Drivers still don't always sig- nal orstopatstopsigns. Speeding goes on from time to time, and kids are still hanging or t on Main Street causing a few problems. Go figure. What is a. police tip writer to do? I posed this question to a member of my family and a fellow law enforcement officer recently. Both had similar responses to the inquiry. You should be used to it," they stated. We dont pay any attention to you either." A person in my position, and you dont consider what I have to say important or relevant? Happy Halloween from the S.U.N! Adults can make sure that Halloween is a treat for everyone by taking special safety precautions. There are two areas of concern, said Gregory W. Good, O.D., a member of the American Optometric Association EnvironmentalOccu-pationa- l Vision Committee. Children need to be able to see and be seen in their costumes. Creative face makeup offers children an unhindered view compared to masks, which may not fit well or have adequately sized eye openings. Children should also be given flashlights so they can navigate easily through neighborhoods when the sun sets. However, the main problem is that trick-or-treate- rs and other pedestrians are difficult to see at night, Dr. Good said. People always think they are more visible at night to drivers than they really are, he said. Parents should sew or iron on reflective fabric or tape to all sides of a childs Halloween costume to make the child more visible to drivers, Dr Good said. Optometric studies show that people who wear reflective material are visible to drivers even at speeds of 70 mph to 80 mph. In contrast, people who wear white are only visible to drivers traveling up to 50 mph. An adult should also accomand make pany sure that children walk on sidewalks or yards and cross streets safely. Finally, to keep other neighborhood children safe, adults should turn on porch or yard lights, keep property clear of objects and drive with special care. trick-or-treate- rs violations People who observe possible wildlife violations are encouraged to report them to 1 (3337), the Division ofWildlife Resources 24 hour-a-da- y poaching hotline. pulled over before lights even We encourage people to call were activated.
