El Nino By Julie Krueger Weather forecasters have told us El Nino is back, and are comparing it to the El Nino that hit in 1982-8This was the year that State Street, in Salt Lake City, turned into a river and the town ofThistle, Utah was under water. According to Jim Duthie. a staff meteorologist for KTVX Channel 4, This years El Nino is showing itself to be stronger than that of 82, and points to the rainfall in Kanab as an example. Kanab has received its total normal rainfall for the year in the last two months. He predicts an 80 chance of a wetter than normal winter for our area. El Nino is a short for El Nino Southern Oscillation, or ENSO 3. Its a term used to describe changes in patterns of Pacific Ocean water temperatures, and winds. It was Peruvian fishermen who first gave a name to the event that in certain years wanned the normally cool ocean waters and reversed their south to north flow. This unusual pattern seemed to peak at the Christian Christmas holiday and the odd weather was dubbed El Nino meaning the Christ Child Normally, warm Pacific Ocean water converges around Indonesia and places west of the International Dateline, kept in place by strong tradewinds. Annually these tradewinds lessen. Randomly, between two to seven years, they stay weak for a period of time long enough to allow this huge pool of warmer-than-usuwater to start moving eastward toward South America. This is the beginning of El Nino. As ocean temperature changes so does the atmosphere above it. Warm ocean water creates the tropical Pacifics largest and most frequent thunderstorms. When this water moves, so do these storms, altering the jet stream winds. Duthie explains. The jet stream is like a river filled with rocks that create ebbs and eddies. El Ninos disruption to the atmosphere is like moving the rocks in the stream; the flow changes. Storms following the jet streams altered track disrupt the normal patterns ofwet anddiy weather." Although predicting El Ninos occurrence and strength is not an exact science, progress is being made. In the last fifteen years our three month long range prediction has improved ten to fifteen percent. Duthie states. The future is in looking to see if there is a correlation between occurrences of El Nino and sunspots, ozone, and accumulating greenhouse gasses. al |
