Dude Larsen, age 88, passed ?wey at this Valley Park Ranch home near Divide, Colorado on October 14, 1997, from causes incident to age. Mr. Larsen lived in Kanab, Utah from 1939 to 1954, during which time he became a famous western artist and prominent local business man. L.H. Dude Larsen was best known fc r his western paintings depicting his early cowboy life in eastern Utah, and often wrote poetry to go with the paintings. He reproduced his paintings on postcards arid so ld 'thiefn throughout the natidn, some even findingtheirway to foreign countries. When demand for his cards increased, his wife Dot also began painting western scenes, while Dude traveled the country sellingthe postcards. They made quite a team and the postcards bee: me a lucrative business for them. In 1941, Dude stepped in as chairman of the Kane County Republican Party. By 1942 he was elected Kane County Attorney and also appointed Kanab City Attorney. Having no law degree, he hired a retired district judge to assist him. Larsen was instrumental in saving the Kane County Hospital in 1946. and by 1948 was elected State disSenator for the trict in southern Utah. five-coun- ) Dude also took over the Kane County Standard newspaper for a short time and in 1947 he formed the Kanab Pictures Corporation and filmed the movie Stallion Canyon, starring Ken Curtis and Carolina Cotton. In partnership with his wife Dot, he owned and operated the Kanab Hotel and Cafe and Larsen Lodge (this lodge has since become part of Chefs Palace Restaurant, known for The Dude Room with a mural painted by Larsen of The Dude). The Larsens had four children while living in Kanab: Bette Gloria, twins, Thomas Ray and Wava Lee. and Sharon Dolores Larsen. Their oldest daughter Bette was with them when they settled in Kanab, and graduated from r 1 Kanab High School. In 1954 Dude and his family moved to Salt Lake City, where he pursued oil, gas, and mineral interests with operations in Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Nevada and Utah. He became intrigued with rare earth extraction and developed the M & L Rare Earth Company in Murray, Utah. By 1960, Dude and Dot bought a large cattle ranch on the Utah- -' Wyoming border, near Lone ' Tree, Wyoming, where they ran 2000 head of steers annually. Their cattle operation included mile spread near a Milford, Utah where they wintered their herd. The ranches were sold in 1965, and Dude and Dot were divorced shortly after. Dude went on to marry Leila Sudholt of Denver, and joined her in Woodland Park, Colorado. Together they owned and operated Valley Park Ranch and numerous properties in Woodland Park, including a western-wea- r store. Shortly after their marriage they bought mining interests in southwest Montana. They purchased considerable property in Twin Bridges, including a block on Main Street with a motel, gas station, office buildings, and a home. Leila passed away in 19S6 and Dude has since resided between his home inTwin Bridges, Montana and Valley Park Ranch in Colo12, 1909 at Richardson, Utah (near Moab) to Thomas Mads and Rebecca Elizabeth Dahling Larsen. Dude married Dorothy Dot Robb on May 9, 1932 in Grand Junction, Colorado. She preceded him in death on April 28, 1990 and was buried in Moab. Mr. Larsen is preceded in death by his parents and all six brothers and sisters: Jennie Finley, Thomas Ray Larsen, Ed Larsen. Edna Hunter. Charles Larsen, and Pearl Sever. He is survived by his four children: Bette L. Stanton. Moab, Utah; Thomas Ray Larsen.
