Show School SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY APRIL t, 1997 -101 Political English Tonight's School Board agenda Correctness By Jodie Button Everybody seems to be going out of their way not to offend anyone else. Young females are not to be called girls, but prewomen. An English professor at the University of Utah, Robert Caserio, says, There are times when I want to be very cautious about offending a feminist colleague, but I cant find the right terms." Even the great Harvard sociologist, David Riesman, about having to go to to avoid the tag lengths "great racist." I think this political correctness thing has gone too far. Schools have been taking political correctness the furthest. They have been taken over by ram-plain- ed political correctness groups. persons...and making personal slurs or epithets based on race, sex, ethic origin, disabilities, religion, or sexual orientation. Even more ridiculous is the story of Brian Ward of West Orange, N.J. He was reprimanded by the high school dean for singing God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman in school precincts. His choice of song allegedly degraded the religions ofthose who dont have a holiday during the Christmas season. We wouldnt want the uncelebrators to suffer by listening to tidings of comfort and joy. I dont understand if political correctness is supposed to make all groups of "whatever' equal, or if its supposed to be like affirmative action and give all these minority groups a chance to be more privileged than the majority. "The melting-po- t ideology, so prevalent in the 1950s, assumed that whatever cultural, racial or ethnic differences each of us bore, we were contributing to an amalgam called the American Character, the American Way of Life. This has now been replaced by what might be called an ideology ofdifference. Rather than contribute to your particular facial, ethnic, or even sexual identity to a general shape, you affirm and even exaggerate the Their goal is to "eliminate prejudice, not just of the petty sort, but the grand prejudice that the intellectual tradition of western Europe occupies the central place in the history of civilization." (Newsweek: Dec. 24, 1990). There are now such things as Homo awareness week. Does this mean that we should also have People with blonde hairweek Left hander's week," or Those with large ears week? We wouldnt want to leave out any special group for fear it might be discriminatory. The most difficult requirement of being politically correct is differences. (Stanley Fish, w'atching what you say. I can see it to express themselves. Minorinow...while watching the NBA ties and discriminated groups championship, you turn to your need to quit whining and be buddy and say, Man, those proud to be identified for what people of color really know how they are or claim to be.
