Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER S, lttS Opinion Guest Editorial 4 1 Robbed of our Diamonds of Freedom Connee Goulding Just to clearup the mystery and wonder whichTony Van Hemert mentioned in the article, 'Escalante Monument was a Gift to Utahns, as written in the Spectrum. Tony Van Hemert credits President Clinton with giving the Escalante Canyons and surrounding areas to the people of Utah. If I am not mistaken, this area was part of this beautiful country long before President Clinton or his grandfathers were even bom. All that we have been given is more government involvement in our lives, and more laws and law enforcement officers to watch over us. And if you believe that many people will now be able to come and look over this new National Monument and take in its stunningviews, youre wrong! There are no plans to make ibis area accessible to the public. N o viator centers, no rest rooms, no roads, no access. Far from it! The elite few dont want the general public in there tramping all over the wilderness. Ifyou believe that President Clinton really created a diamond and made a gift ofit to the people ofUtah, I have to wonder what God has been up to all this time. And Fm also wondering ifthe Emperor with no clothes, has direct descendants. People who look at the heavy ropes around their necks and see diamond necklaces There are many people in Garfield and Kane Counties still living whose parents and grandparents are the ones who opened up tins country. They homesteaded the land, often sacrificing everything an d living in deplorable conditions compared to the ones we live in today. They built roads, planted orchards and fields, and developed water resources They enhan ced and preserved the beautiful landscape that we enjoy today. With Pres dent Clintoris 'one fell swoop, every American citizen lost much more than they gained. We 1 ost the right to not have our private property seized by the federal government. When one person loses, we all lose. The next property seized could be yours, when some person or group decides that the uses you have found for your property d oesht agree with their ideas of right and wrong uses of your land. We also lost the right to be beard in issues which affect our very lives. So did you. We lost the right to due process, the right of having our voicesheard, and the right of havingthe people that we have elected being involved in the process of things that affect our lives. In fact, one of the duly elected county commissioners from Kane County was put under the strong arm ofthe Secret Service at the Grand Canyon when he asked to give a letter to the Pres: dent. So much for having our voice heard! We lost. So didyou. I value my right to he involved in the process and my right to vote for honorable people to make sure our voices are heard. Our Founding Fathers were so frustrated with a government that wouldnt listen to them, and laid heavy taxes without representation, that they threw the tea into the Boston Harbor. When we are not heard we lose, and so do you. Contrary to what you believe, the people in Garfield and Kane Counties know that they live in the most beautiful place in the world. We have great pride in our surroundings and a great reverence for the land. The people of these counties are like the tough little pine trees that sink their roots deep into the rocks and ledges. They hold on through all kinds of weather, drought, floods, winds, scorching sunshine, and snow. Unlike others that are blown to and fro by every gust of wind like the tumbleweeds. People that believe every bit of propaganda that they hear, and are used, to push some extremist agenda, never looking at all rides of a question. No, we dont feel like we have been handed a gift, a diamond. We feel like we have been robbed. Letters to the Editor What is yout opinion ?
