Show Opinion g, the evil environmentalist, and you congratulate our city councils attempt to emasculate Ken Rait and SUWA by declarwhatever ing them the heck that means. This is rather infantile and undignified behavior for a government body, reminiscent of a little child who fears a monster, and so shuts his eyes and says Its not real, its not real, so it cant hurt me Well, it IS real, and perhaps if you talked to it like a rational adult, you might find that its not that scary after all. Instead, you persist with a blaming attitude that isnt going to help our community in the least. It only serves to create divisions and distracts you from what you could be doing, which is to take some PROACTIVE steps that will help our community long term. First of ail, recognize that things change everywhere, not just here in Kane County. Yes, our econmonic base used to be timber, ranching, and mining, but USED TO BE is the operative phrase. If this sets you to feeling sorry for yourselves again, tell it to the hundreds of thousands of AT&T and IBM workers who have al so lost their jobs, careers, and way of life in the last decade due to exporta-t- i on ofjobs, automation, and harvesting. Things are tough all over. However, you non-entitie- s, head-in-the-san- d, non-sustaina- have a choice here: you can keep crying and clinging to the last remnants of dying industries, or utilize some vision and start to create an economy based on the Community APRIL 3. 1996 Medical: No information on April Canyon there medical services at this time. Lumber mills and coal mines are not going to rescue Kanab; they are band-aidThese industries have no long term interest in our future, our town, orour families. They move in, use our labor, degrade our environment, then pack up and take their huge profits with them when theyre done with us. I dont see any parks or beautification projects paid for by the Kaibab Mill, do you? You also applauded the hanging of Mr. Redford in effigy, but while youre strutting and s. crowing, realize that that one stupid stunt probably cost Kane County millions ofdollars in lost revenue from the movie industry. Is that really something to be proud of? The mob who committed that act are probably more responsible for taking the bread out ofour mouths over the last 20 years than any ol environmentalist has ever been! So, knowing we cannot reverse the poor decisions of the past, lets not make any more. Look around you. Kanab has a severely underutilized tourism economy, and developing it further is one of the smartest things we can do to ensure our economic future, without turning us into another Moab, if its done with some foresight and planning. We also need to go out into the world and court other companies like Stampin Up!, which does not pollute or impact our environment in any negative way, yet provides jobs for our community. These are the sorts of industries that will sustain our community in the long term, and will support our inevitable growth. So why dont you throw away your cryin towel and start thinking of ways to help Kanab enter the next century successfully. Your grandchildren are counting on you.
