The new Kane County school is located within the Glen Canyon National Recreation area on Lake Powell, in a remote area of southern Utah. The $2.5 million school will house 42 students in grades The students are bussed from quality, with low nutrient levels and total dissolved solids. Some problems identified in the study include: 1) Large fluctuations in water depth, which interferes with shore line facilities and the fish- . The decaying weeds also deplete oxygen needed to sustain fish during winter months. The study recommends four management activities, including: Maintain a pipeline which carries spring water into the 1) middle of the west end of the lake. This is a source of oxygen during winter months. 2) Develop a water weed management program to remove weeds in low water years; 3) Evaluate the feasibility of introducing grass carp to control the water weeds; 4) Develop an agreement with water users to avoid the release of stored water to maintain a more stable lake depth. iSr 30 trailer schools. The Super- intendent said that the Kane County School District began exploring different methods of creative financing since the district itself didnt have enough money to foot construction costs on its own. We approached Jon Lancaster (Park Superintendent at the time) and told him our problem. Having a good school in Bullfrog was important to more than just the Kane County School District. The National Park Service and ARAMARK Leisure Services (the concessionaire which operates all Lake Powell services) were both having trouble staffingtheir remote lake locations. Without good schools, worker quality was being affected. It was difficult hiring employees for lake tourism jobs, because those who were parents worried that the schools were too spread out and Future growth of the area under-develope- d.
