Ten years later I finished my second graduate degree and my wife and I returned to the Midwest to work near Chicagos south side. In 1979 we made a decision to move back to Utah because it seemed something was missing in our lives. We had enjoyed Provo as students, and were looking to recapture that enjoyment by returning to Utah. Settling in southern Utah, due to employment and economic circumstances, we began the search for the missing ingredient. In 1982 we bought ten acres of undeveloped river bottom land located two miles south of the post office in Orderville and converted it into a homestead that we call Anonymity. . Owning land gave us a feeling of permanence and we decided that moving was not an option no matter what the economic situation. , Living on our land in Utah means cool, dry, quiet, and clear summer nights with star light bright enough to produce lullaby soft shadows. It means seeing everything as far as you can see. It means becoming rich by watching an eagle fly and measuring wealth by the beauty that surrounds you. It means talking to God and listening to his causal reply. ...all things are created and made to bear record of me, He said; ...things which are in the heavens above, and things which are on the earth, and things which are in the earth, and tjiings which are under the earth.. .all things bear record of me. (Moses 6:63). This causal reply is repeated often in rolling thunder and vivid lightning. It is recorded in blooming flowers, and in the winter wonder playland of Cedar Lake Powell. Mountain. It means leaving yesterday behind and finding home in places youve ' never; been before. It means having joy just a thing, your kids were raised on, and considering iove just a way of life. It means treating your home like a long lost friend where sunshine is the rule, not the exception and life is mostly having fun. Living in Utah means all this and more, but mostly it means relationships. Utah The people Living in Utah means being married to one wife for time and all eternity. It means having twelve children and not being unique. It means serving God by bearing one anothers burdens. It means not abandoning the home to shape society. It means befriending an inspired United States Constitution with responsible citizenship. It means acknowledging your body as a divine gift with a stewardship attached that requires personal accountability. laws that run counter to the It means being tolerant of a myriad of self-evide- nt man-mad- e law of free agency and experiencing prejudice from people who see you as being different and letting you know it in a variety of subtle and unsubtle ways. It also means quiet peaceful living with little fear of crime or violence. It means helping your children excel in their academic pursuits and being wholly absorbed in family and church life. It means a frugal, provident life style that recognizes heaven-mad- e affluence but not as a blessing. Yes, Utah is all of this and more.
