ByWALTBORLA Sports Editor Schools Spartans, High Emery touted to be one of the best basketball teams to represent the neighboring county school in years, played a good first quarter and a good final three minutes against Carbon on the Dino court last Thursday night, but what happened in between was something the Spartans would like to forget. Carbon, not a smooth working quintet this night, came off with a victory. The visitors started fast and outplayed coach Mike Kernodles Dinos in the first quarter by fashioning an 5 lead. Going into the second quarter, Kernodle put his charges in a pressing defense, picking up the court Spartans at which seemed to rattle the visitors. Emery made several costly offensive errors to turn the ball over to Carbon and Steven Burge and Darin Judd paced a Dino surge that gave Carbon a 4 lead at the mark. The Spartans suffered through a second quarter and seven-poithird period. Judd and Burge were having spectacular games as they accounted for 37 of the Dino points, the former getting 18 and the latter This pair got 13 of the 17 field goals Carbon scored in the game, so it was apparent that the remainder of the Dino squad was having its troubles much as the Emery team. However, this was another game that provided Kernodle and his assistants an opportunity to test several different combinations on the court. Late in the game, with the Dinos experimenting, Emery appeared to come alive and slowly closed the gap on a rally sparked by Flint Harrison, the Spartans hardworking pivot man. The Spartans can be a much closer knit team than they displayed on the Carbon court, as the first seven players in the Emery lineup have been playing together as a unit since junior high days at Canyon View. Harrison was the top scorer for the losers with 18 points and Darin Wood added nine more. As it was with Carbon, these two players accounted for 10 of the 16 field goals the Spartans managed in the game. The Dino staff appears to be peaking their team slowly for the Region Eight campaign after the holidays.
