Show Thursday, Dec. THE GREEN SHEET 7B 188 1, HOLLYWOOD HEARTBEATENTERTAINMENT film v.ith very funny Police Squad Film Is A Great Comedy SEEN DEPT.: ON THE SCREEN J Several seasons ago ABC tried to offer us a sc called Police Squad starring Leslie Nielsen as LAPD Lt. M,u Frank Drebin. The shows creators gave us the successful film Airplane so the show should have been a very successful comedy. The only thing that went wrong is that it was ahead of its time, especially with the folks who were still mourning the loss of Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction. Therefore, the network dropped the ax on the show. Now in 1988 Lt. Frank Drebin is back, this time on the big screen in the theaters with The case, you ask? (See, I heard you Naked Gun: From the Files of ask that question). Well, whats Police Squad. always so funny about a man No matter how you look at the slipping on a banana peel? The Naked Guru From the Files of Police Squad is a fast, funny Hales Show Is Another Masterpiece by Olga Milius Green Sheet Theater Critic SOUTH SALT LAKE. If you want to get rid of the "bah humbugs," go to the Hale Center Theaters annual presentation of Dickens A Christmas Carol and youll leave with the Christmas spirit in abundance. Costumed characters transport you back to Dickens London as you enter the door; the theater itself is painted with murals of that city and the Christmas lights in the trees, shrubs and foyer add to the ambiance. in Cast members period costumes visit with the audience until, at 8 oclock sharp a r enters announcing "Eight oclock and alls well as the group gathers under an to sing lamp-po- dialogue, slapstick humor and actors with the ability to carry it off. in this hysterical film are O.J. Simpson, Priscilla Presley, George Kennedy and Ricardo Montalban, all as youve never seen them before, but will want to see again. If you have a sense of humor you should have a field day at The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad. I enjoyed it enough to go see it again. Also out there in the theater,: Mystic Pizza which is for the teen movie crowd; Oliver and Company from the Disney people, which is a delightful film and a return to the great animation Disney is known for. Scrooged starring Bill Murray in a very funny rendition of Dckins classic A Christmas Carol but set in the present; Childs Play for those of you who want to put some horror back in your life. Give my regards to Chucky, Ernest Saves Christmas with Jim Varney as Ernest who happens to get involved, in his usual ways, helping Santa. Knowwhatlmean, Vem? And then theres High Spirits (No, the silly local liquor laws have nothing to do with it) starring Steve Guttenberg, Daryl Hannah and Peter OToole in a funny ghostly romantic comedy, Mel Gibson, Michelle Pfiffer (Ahhhh!) and Raul Julia make it hot and sexy in Tequila Sunrise and Cocoon The Return with the original cast back in a well-playe- d sequel. Tneie is something out there for everyone, including the ticket gift books, so get out of the house and see a movie this week. RANDOM THOUGHTS DEPT.: Khett butler either Pee Wee Herman or Ernest P. Worrel. The Scarlett role could go to either Cher or Madonna with Dr. Ruth Westheimer declaring the she know "dont about nothing birthin no babies." First Robin Givens announced that she was going to take heavyweight champ Mike Tyson for a bundle of cash. This brought of Robin reams upon tons unfavorable so she publicity changed her mind and announced that she didnt want any money from the champ, just a divorce. Now sources say that she has changed her mind again and wants big bucks but will turn over any money she receives to charity. Based on the way she has of changing her mind it is possible that she would give the money to charity. It is also possible that I will be the first round draft pick for the Buffalo Bills. Lots of commotion being created in Gollywood over the impending filming of Gone With The Wind 2. Plenty of back stabbing from those who feel they should have the coveted roles. Among some of those who have are been mentioned Jack Nicholson, Burt Reynolds, Tom Selleck for Rhett Butler and Meryl Streep (just cant imagine her saying Oh fiddle de de) Barbra Streisand and others for the role of Scarlett Ohara. You guessed it, I had to get my two cents worth in on the casting on what is supposed to be a $40 million film so here goes. For PERSONAL NOTES DEPT.: This week we lost another great actor. I refer, of course, to John Carradine who appeared in comedies, horror films and serious dramatic films over his long career. Crippled with arthritis and very often in great pain he worked almost to the very end displaying a great degree of professionalism and respect for his craft. T had the opportunity to meet hin and found him to be a gentleman with a good sense of humor and, although a star, he had both feet firmly on the ground. It would be great if some of these newcomers who throw tantrums on the set and make outrageous demands on their produces would take a lesson from John Carradine. Mdny thanks to Ivan Rogers, star of Crazed Cop which is currently in the video stores from Unicom Video, for calling me on Thanksgiving morning to wish me a happy bird day. Ivan is a talented and gifted actor whose next film will be Two Wrongs Make a Right due out in January or February. Until next week, keep your feet off the seats and the popcorn hot! town-crie- st carols. The group of carolers during scene changes, gathered in various comers of the theater to sing, and successfully distract attention from the quick set changes. In their lovely costumes and with excellent voices, accompanied by a violinist they add greatly to the entire production. And it is a production that leaves little to be desired. Scrooge, played again by Richard G. Wilkins must be exactly as Dckens pictured him. Wilkins virtuoso a gives performance in his favorite role, and his gradual change from the miserly curmudgeon to the true believer is masterfully done. Most roles are double cast. On Saturday, Alan Mangum played Bob and Tanya Radebaugh was Mrs. Cratchit. Both were at home in their roles. An audience favorite was Tom Stam as the Spirit of Christmas Present. His joviality and contagious laugh captured adults and kids alike and earned him a big hand. And his in the role of Old Joe was equally well done. This is a very talented man. In fact, a highlight of the show was the pawnshop scene, with Stam, Andrea Clark as the laundress, Jim Smith as the undertaker and Ruth Hale as the charwoman. The four played well together and the response by Scrooge and his ghostly visitor were right in line with the action. It would take too long to mention this in everyone production who is worthy of mention. Suffice it to say that, of all the Christmas Carol productions I have seen, this is the best. The Cratchit the family, Fezziwigs, Fred and his wife, Topper and his girl are all there, just as in the book.
