A musical story of the first Christmas, Menottis tender Amahl and the Night Visitors will open Monday in City Reps Family Theatre and run through Dec. 23. The play was originally commissioned by NBC Television Opera in 1951. The story tells of a little crippled boy, Amahl, and his meeting with the three Magi in their search for the Christ Child. Amahl has become one of the most frequently performed operas in the country and will be produced by DoubleStar producers Dave and Donna Johnson, with direction by Donna who will also handle vocal direction and costume for the design Gian-Carl- o production. Not one, but three young boys will play the title role. "So many talented young boys auditioned for the role I have cast three Amahls and three mothers," said Donna. "The youngest is only eight years old and he plays it beautifully." Cast as Amahl are John S. Patrick, William McCaa and Jared Noel Hancock with Mark McDaniels as understudy. The mother will be played by Mary Ann Dresher, Anne Rasmussen and LaDawn Gardner. Jerrod Murphy, Michael D. Ensign and James A. Dale will play the three kings, Kaspar, Melchior and Balthazar. Others in the cast are Kenneth Bass, Rae Healy, Holly Healy, Maria McKay, Raelynn Potts, Linda Strickland, Maren Katie Hettinger, Karen Webb, Sarah Weenig, Kristina Doris Spencer, Nigel Yuen, James, Jim Perryman, Custis Scott, Ron Ruske, Myma Melett, John Holmgren, Terry Spencer, Trent Oliphant, Zach Griffen and Portia Early. The production team includes RaeLynn Potts as choreographer and assistant director; Dave set and Johnson, lighting designer; Katie Hettinger, graphic design and Richard Chatelain directing the ten piece orchestra. Amahl and the Night Visitors will play at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 5, 8, 15, 17, 19 and 23. A 2 p.m. matinee will be given on Dec. 10. Ticket prices are $4.75 for children and $6.50 for adults. City Reps box office is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 45 minutes prior to curtain time. Call for information and telephone reservations. Others in the cast are Richard Mathews, Nick Bakay and Katie La Bourdette, from New York and local professionals Anne Stewart Mark, Michael Ruud, Patrick Page, Duane Hill and Alan Nash. Frank Gerrish, Sam Stewart and Bill Osborn round out the cast of comics.
