Show 5B Thursday, Dec. THE GREEN SHEET 1, 1988 SCHOOLS Students Pass Go In Reading KEARNS. A variation on the popular Monopoly game helped students at Western Hills Bennion elemenbeat elementary tarys record of the number of pages read in a seven week period. "Its been a lot of fun and created interest in reading," said principal Paul Hansen. Dr. Ken Bennion principal Higgins, challenged the Western Hills community to beat the Bennion communitys record of 1,116,999 pages, he explained. The Western Hills students accepted the challenge, and as of Monday have read, in seven weeks, a total of 1,600,363 pages, he said. To help the project along, kindergarten teacher Chris Newell designed a large playing board and collected and recorded daily totals. Sue Wheeler, PTA president helped track and coordinate volunteer help from the community. Individual houses were put up reflecting books and pages read, with names featuring Hills Western and faculty neighborhood, such as Bridger Turnpike, PTA Power Plant, Johnson Circle, Kearns Railroad, Office Plaza and Wildcat Railroad. And, said the principal, Hansen Jail. When a class landed in jail, they were required to read to the principal before they could proceed. Classes passing "Go" received treats from the PTA Snow cones and pizza parties were given for those achieving high totals weekly. The students read a lot those last two weeks, said Hansen. Heather Frei, fourth grade, read 9.099 pages; Kim Gillespie, a sixth grader, read 9,455 and Heather Ipson, second grade, read 5.100 pages. Students were invited to turn in suggestions for "consequences" to be carried out by Mr. Hansen if reached their goal. they Suggestions include dressing like a bookmark and singing to all classes or dressing in a mini-skiand serving lunch to all 755 students. be to The consequence performed by the principal will be decided by a committee and carried out early next year. The Plymouth students and others at Beehive, Granger, Twin Peaks, Valley Crest and Webster elementaries are participating in a hands-oapproach to science made possible through PTA donations, parent support and materials provided by Wild Goose Publishing, a local firm. Parent volunteers assemble materials necessary for a days lesson in a particular grade level. Those materials may include balloons, test tubes,- cloth, sand and a wide variety of apparatus. At Plymouth, the TTA raised $1,500 for the purchase of the lab. Parents supply pop bottles, paper tissue rolls and assorted odds and ends used in experiments. The third graders have been on several projects working including static electricity said teacher Ada Kaczka. They found that by rubbing (hard) a woolen cloth on a ruler, that ruler would then pick up pencil shavings. And that a balloon, if rubbed hard on the head can make your hair stand on end. The made also children electromagnets, and watched to see how current would flow through the copper wire to a nail, then experimented to see if they could make a compass move J( information those interested may call Cathy Bahr, VOTE FOR Young Scientists Conduct Experiments At Plymouth TAYLORSVILLE. comes to life for KEARNS.
