Show 10 THE QUEEN SHEET Thursday, Dec. 1,1938 SPORTS Bulldogs (David) Outlast AF (Goliath) In Overtime Test SALT LAKE. The annual David and Goliath battle between Judge Memorial and American Fork came out in favor of David this year, as the much smaller Judge team toppled the Cavemen on their home court in a double overtime barn burner, Friday. Judge attempted to make it two in a row over Utah County teams last night (Wednesday) as it visited Pleasant Grove (after press time), and will play its first home game tomorrow against Ogden at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs will then have a week off before a game with Hillcrest on Dec. 9. The Cavemen, featuring a 68, a 67, and a 64 front line, jumped out to a first quarter lead and seemed to have the game in hand. Then came, according to Coach Jim Yerkovich, "one of the best defensive quarters a Judge team has ever played" as Judge held the potent A.F. offense to just five points. Meanwhile the Bulldogs went on a 29-- run from one minute left in the first quarter to the half, and the much smaller Judge Team had a lead at the half. Judge was called for five fouls in the first minute and a half of the third quarter and the Cavemen got back into the game at the charity stripe with the halftime lead shrinking to The game was tied at 69 at the buzzer as Judge barely missed a shot. The first overtime ended in a tie, but in the second overtime the lightning fast Judge team took over with Rob Solvason scoring two buckets as the visitors notched seven straight points and held on for the win. Judge was 19x23 at the free throw line, while the Cavemen hit 26 free throws. Judge shot 44 percent from the field and 78 percent from the stripe. An amazing statistic indicated Judge had 58 rebounds against the much bigger team, with Nathan Semerad leading his team in that category with 15. Judge, which has been a good passing team the last few years, had 20 assists. Coach Yerkovich was ecstatic about the win and felt that it was a perfect illustration of the "We" concept that he teaches, as eight players contributed to the win, 83-7- 8 21-1- 0 6 40-2- 8 12-poi- nt 54-5- 1. 73-7- 3 everyone filling his role well. Jimmy Soto had 32 points for the game with 22 of those coming in the first half as he hit on 2x3 three pointers. Soto also had 10 rebounds. Chris jones came close to a triple double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while dishing out seven assists. Rob Solvason had 11 points, while Nathan Semerad held American Forks big scorer, Sean Wilson, to only four points and had eight points to go along with his 1 5 rebounds. Yerkovich was very pleased with the play of his center combination as David Webster hit 4x4 from the field and had nine rebounds, while Justin Walsh had five points and six rebounds. Again emphasizing the team victory motif, Yerkovich said that two seniors, Matt Kitterer and Tim Green, came in during the big second quarter turnaround and contributed greatly to the explosion that turned the game around. On Tuesday the Cyprus Skating Rink will pass a milestone as it observes 25 years of recreation. Spearheading the project were Henry Mori, owner of Mori Market, who was a strong advocate of recreation for Magna youths, Garfield (Cap) Lewis, who ran a bar and was also county road supervisor; and Thomas Barker, a Kennecott official with knowledge of financial figures and how to get things done. Together they formed a winning team that ploughed through miles of red tape and bureaucracy to make their dream come true. It was late 1962 when the idea for a combination tennis court and skating rink complex first surfaced, and by Feb. 14, 1963 contracts were awarded on construction pf the new facility. Approximately 150 yards of concrete was poured at the site in May, bringing the $135,000 recreation site nearer completion, and almost all of the equipment for the compressor room had been installed, including condensers, brine tanks and ammonia tanks. The building that would house the change rooms was also close to being finished and installation of fencing for the tennis courts was implemented. Two weeks later the tennis program was in progress, under the direction of Valoy Eaton, Cyprus high school under the coach, working of the supervision County Recreation Dept. (Eaton is now a Utah famous artist whose paintings are highly prized). The tennis courts became a popular gathering place that first summer and by fall both ends of the age specturm were eagerly anticipating the opening of the rink. On Oct. 10, 1963 the community council presented a check to Granite District for $10,000 as payment on the sports complex, and the grand opening was held on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 7 p.m. with C.W.
