Show THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, April 21, 1988 "TO U q9 I-- '! HJ Lenae Andersson To Wed Russell Warr Tomorrow Out My Window Ethel Bradford How about Waldburger. Karen is a beautiful, tall, willowy woman, with a body that reaches right down to the floor. Her name is from Leipzieg, a town on the German Swiss border and means a person who lives in a forest village. See, what I mean? Names . . . names . . . names. Odd names, unpronounceable names, lyrical names, staid names, wonderful names. Hove them all When people once reached these shores from other lands, one of the first things they did was to Americanize their names. That is, unless some Ellis Island official took it upon himself to change the "odd name to one he liked. Without even asking permission to do so, either and a lot of names in the 1800s were changed that way. And, although many clung to their family name for the first generation, by the time the second grew up, changes were made and soon all connection to what the name had once been was lost. Their own grandparents wouldnt have recognized them. d Today, however, were wiser, more we like the names we were born with and we keep them, too. So theyre hard to spell? So what? They are our names and that is that. self-assure- and We have a Milius who was born in England, but whose married name came from Germany and is a derivation of the name Miller. And dont ask Olga how, for she isnt certain of the steps it took to go from Miller to Milius. Theres a Meimberg and a Mickleson, both of Teutonic origin. Dorene has been told Meimberg means My Rock and Bob tells me that Mickleson is the Danish English way of saying he is the son of Michael. Then, if you think these arent really different . how about Fijacko? No, it isnt Oriental, and it isnt Polynesian, either. It comes straight from Vienna, Austria and is terrific. His first name happens to be Merrill but he pronounces it Murl and the two together, when spoken with a in Fijacko, are like velvet to the tongue. soft Lenae Andersson and Russell J. Warr have chosen Friday, April 22, to be married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. A wedding luncheon will be catered at the Hunter South stake Center and a reception will be given that evening at the same address, 5180 W. 4700 South. The bride is the daughter of Lars G. and Sylvia R. Andersson of West Valley She City. graduated from Kearns high and has attended the Salt Lake Commumity College. The groom is the son of James and Myma Warr of Riverton. He graduated from Bingham high and also has attended SLCC. He completed an LDS mission in Oslo, Norway. EAGLE SCOUTS . . J And now hold onto your hats. We have a Waskiewicz who is of Polish lineage, and who laughed when I asked about his name, and said, "Wait till you hear what my Mothers maiden name is." It happens to be Petroski and he doesnt know what either of them mean. I love them, just the same. Today I write of the names here at the Green Sheet office and I divide them into three groups. First are those thoroughly familiar names that no one ever has to ask how to spell. You know, Jones, Brown, Bird, Bradford, Olsen, Cutler and such. Solid, everyday names. We have a Westegarrd. Is it Dutch? Straight from the valley of the Rhine? Who knows for sure. And we have a Weitzenhoffer which is Hungarian and Beverly says it means (loosely translated) wheat farmer. Then comes the middle group. They are more interesting and people have to spell them more often than not. Like Houghton, Prince, Bernhard, Bartmess, Funk, Lamb, Burrows, McQuiston and DeLange. Solid American names but with enough of a difference that one must listen to get them right. Then theres a lovely "half Greek lady whose names read like the lyrics of a song, which is one big mouthful for such a small person. Theres an Egli who is Swiss; a Chorlton who says the name is pure Canuk (Canadian to you and me), an Edge . . . and Im just getting a good start. But then . . . wah, wah, wah, wah. The third group captivates you and you cant help but wonder, not only how to spell them, but where did they come from and what do they mean? They are lovely. Names, names, names. Wonderful names. And wonderful people who take pride in the names they were born with and who know that it doesnt matter where you live, your name is your name. And thats that. And thats also great! .
