Show 2 THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, April 21,1988 I 1 VTrrrrvoHrrTS i Consistency? Its About Time! r order to save money on the costs of lighting, Benjamin Franklin suggested businesses open their shops an hour or so earlier during the summer months to take advantage of longer daylight hours. Ever since World War II when Congress first mandated the practice, Franklins "common sense" suggestion has been used as an excuse for that strange unnatural custom we call "Daylight Savings Time." While Franklins idea to take advantage of the natural increase of light during the warmer months makes perfect sense, the essentially unnatural idea of juggling time twice each year in order to force everyone to do so is getting to be a rather bizarre practice, to say the least. Because human beings, by and large, are regulated by "biological clocks" built into the fabric of our physical composition, it can take some folks at least six months to adjust to the idea that an hour has been lopped off here or added there ... just in time to do it all t time change. over again during This not only puts some people in a perpetual state of limbo as far as their own biology is concerned, it can also give rise to bureaucrats in the bevies of bleary-eye- d spring and summer months and a increase of incessant insomniacs in the fall. And thats during a "normal" year! This year, however - given the wisdom of the U.S. Congress and the lobbying efforts of a consortium composed of everything from charcoal manufacturers to chocolate marketeers - we have all had to face this dreaded ritual three weeks early. In years past the "spring forward" would have come upon us this weekend. Now, our readers write i In the-nex- -- -- EDITORIAL An Open Letter to the Mayor To Honorable LaVar McMillan, however, the nation has already had to suffer through nearly three weeks of the stuff in early spring, to boot! Franklin's suggestion, in the final analysis, really had nothing to do with "turning back the clock." He thought it wise to open shops early to take advantage of nature's changes to meet human needs. Ignoring biology in the interest of selling more charcoal is merely sacrificing human needs to benefit the needs of commerce. nd While opening shops earlier during the longer daylight hours may be prudent from the shopkeepers point of view, it is not necessarily a "natural" or "wise" practice for everyone else. Some folks need that "down time" in order to get their wits together enough to patronize those very commercial establishments. Where is the wisdom in this o system of timekeeping anyway? Whats wrong with picking one method of keeping track of time and sticking with it? If the idea of Daylight Savings Time is so desirable, why not stay with it all year long? If not, whats wrong with yo-y- staying on Standard Time? Congress officers to subdue him and again the jail refused to Thanks, Murray City v ought to think things through a bit more carefully before mandating such sweeping legislation as instituting an earlier Daylight Savings Time. After all, there are some folks out here who still keeping up with the Gregorian have trouble calendar and that bothersome little February 29th every four years or so ... Last summer I replaced the curb, gutter and drive approaches at may home on Knollcrest. I checked with the city engineer and paid my $10 fee. By the time I got home Mayland Madsen was waiting to mark the work and set a date to begin. I checked with my contractor and about three days later I called the street department to begin. Before noon a man came by with a machine, made the road cut and broke the concrete. That afternoon several crews moved in and out with their machines. The old concrete was removed and hauled away, a cut was made in the sidewalk, the street was swept and safety barriers were in place by All this was coordinated by radio messages. It was apparent that the coordinator had several jobs going at the same time. The crews moved in did their job and left with no lost time of manpower nor equipment. The equipment was in good repair and each operator knew how to use it. They each did their job and moved on. After my contractor installed the new concrete, the road cut was backfilled by a city crew; the day after, I called the street department to let them know the job was finished. I want to compliment you and the Murray City Street Department on a job well done. In a time when we hear so much criticism of government and its employees I want to say that I have never received more prompt nor courteous service than I received from Murray City not even from private industry. And at such a good price. I think I received much more value and service for $210 of my tax money, than I received for the $210 1 spent at a local automobile dealers service shop just last week. This is in regard to the county sheriffs office jail policy on the acceptance of prisoners. Presently I dont think that Sheriff Pete Hayward has the safety of the citizens of the valley as the top item on his list of priorities. Recently we had a family fight in the city in which I work where a husband beat his wife causing her physical injury. This husband was arrested and taken to the station where he was released on a misdeamenor citation for spouse abuse after the jail refused to incarcerate him. This man returned to his home and again beathia wife the same night, again we responded and again we took the husband into custody, only to have the jail refuse to incarcerate him. Again he had to be released on a citation and returned to his home and beat his wife a third time, this time he had fled prior to our arrival. On another occasion our department arrested a known violent person who was high on drugs and it took three officers to subdue him. Detox and the Jail both refused to accept him and after two hours of effort to get him incarcerated he had to be released on a citation back into the public where the next boy near a morning he severly injured a school, again he was arrested and again it took four ld I enjoy the Sandy Sentinel and look forward to its arrival. I would like to make a suggestion for your sports section. Not one mention has been made of high school soccer. Statistics now show that more youngsters in the U.S. are now playing soccer than football and baseball combined. A mention of high school standings or any comments would be appreciated. Realizing that many parents and spectators now line soccer fields weekly, I think Im not the only one who would appreciate reading about something besides baseball. Donna Carper EDITORS NOTE Unfortunately the size of our sports staff does not permit us to track down information on all sports at all high schools. However, if someone connected with the team, either a coach, scorekeeper or even an interested parent can get the information into us by Tuesday at 10 a.m., we will do our best to run it. A letter, explaining the above, was mailed to every athletic director at every high school we cover last Dear Editor: I am encouraged by the entry of Richard Snelgrove in the race for the U.S. Congress in Utahs 2nd District. Seldom do we see the entry into politics of successful members of the business community. The sacrifices are too great. But this is the type of person we need to address the problems that face this area, job growth, and opportunity for ourselves and our children. In this election the choices are clear, successful businessman versus career political attorney.
