I made my plans to lie in bed and DO OTIIIG, but a friend laughingly mentioned that the ceiling could fall on me . . . and so I forgot it all and went about my day. I took one gieat big sign of relief this morning, tober St h. because bv then I knew that October 7tli . . and exaittv 4 00 in the afternoon was on see, for ihe past three yeais, that day and th.it tine have been bad news' for Ethel. My nemesis 1 nd I hair considered crossing that d. and tine utf my calendar and spending the inter al in bed. It itli all elect i it ill turned off. Stanley was born April 21, 1917 in Granger to Parley and Nellie Warr He was employed at the Garfield Smelter for eleven years, and then operated his own barber shop for a few years He then worked for Granger Builders Supply as manager until he retired It ell, believ e it or not, that afternoon I was stir frying in a Chinese wok, and while chopping the vegetables, the wok became too hot and suddenly burst into flames. Very calmly I reached for the lid, put it on and smothered the fire. And then I sat down and said . . . right out loud. . . . "All right God, h hat are y ou try ing to do to me? What are you trying to tell me?" , eedless to say. He didnt answer. It began in Vst when I was stupid enough to use a 'pedestal' table foi a stepladdei and nearly killed mi self So joking !l I h.jn trung to do was move a hanging nd after stepping upon a sturdy chair, 1 lamp found the table to be nearer to the spot I needed to be to put that lamp up Xow. Im not superstitious but I'm not stupid either, although there are those who might argue that moot point, so... hen I came to' 1 u as on the floor in a with (hair, lamp and table right on top id om mg. hinting, Ethel. It was a year before I was utuallv without pain, and to this d.n . it I overdue with a shovel, rake or I pay the price in ilieaien lot bull a bioom My side still aches four years later when I get too ambitious with a rake; Grams house sits an empty shell and I stir fry my food w ith extra caution now, so yesterday was almost, to me, the aclrng Oh. me. listen to the it ise advice to always use a step ladder lor real lung . . and certainly not a pedestal table, ol all things Uhen three o'clock came I began looking right and then looking left. I watched carefully for earthquakes. stayed away from stoves, and wouldn't have driven my car that nest hour for any thing or anyone. The net yeai, very same day. very same time, I h,i ai the office and Hon Edge came up lioni the shop and verv nervously told me that cithei mv home, or Grams nevt door, was in fla mes I was i mining out the door h hen Caroly n I icdtke met me and said " It's not your's, Ethel, it's Glam's " And. . . I made it, boy, oh boy , oh boy, I made it and if God just happens to he listening, and reads the Green Sheet, I am letting Him know that I've learned my lesson (whatever it might be) and He needn't drive the point home again.
