Show 8 ' Thursday, October THE GREEN SHEET 8, 1987 Progress' To Claim Family Home On 8000 West by LaRee Pehrson Green Sheet Staff Writer MAGNA According to Thomas Wolfe, a famous American novelist, you cant go home again But the children of Arthur V and Grace Moss Jenkins not only went home again last week, they also along their relatives, friends and former neighbors In all there were over 150 people who stepped back in time, if only for a brief moment, as they toured the house and out buildings of the old Magna landmark on 3500 So 8000 West and reminisced about another life, another time, when life moved at a slower pace The farewell open house was part of the Jenkins childrens ritual of letting go of the past, and paying tribute to their parents who had scratched out a living from the original 40 acre farm The house they grew up in has stood through two world wars, the great depression and the raising of 11 living children out of 12 births But it is now earmarked for the wreckers ball to make way for tomorrow Arthur V Jenkins was born in Salt Lake at North Point, to John and Rozella Newberry Morris Jenkins Grace Alice Moss Jenkins was born at Lake Point to William Edward and Selina Critch Moss They were married March 25, 1902 in Tooele They began their life together in the home of George Whipple, on the southeast corner of 3100 So 8000 West It was here that Alice, Vernon, Eddie, Evard and Clarence were born They moved up to 3500 South in the fall of 1911, and their daughter Ada was the first of six children born there, including Kenneth, Florence, Rulon, Marian and Rita At first they lived in a tent, but Arthur traded a horse for a little house that he and Joe Coon moved from 3100 South Since there was already another small house on the northwest side of the property there was plenty of room for their rapidly growing family, as well as friends and relatives who sometimes came to stay During the early years Arthur ran brought the farm for Lou Rasmussen, who was described by Eddie Jenkins as being an TWW man, because he advocated government ownership of Eddie also noted that in those days boys had to go to work at age 16 to work off the poll tax that was imposed on property owners for road improvements And the improvements didn't have the benefits of modern equipment or pre mixed cement it was all done by hand 3500 South later became part of the Lincoln In- everyone's assets The upper 40 acres of the original 160 homesteaded by George Whipple were later purchased by Jenkins where he built a barn, a granary, chicken coops, a root cellar and an tercontinental Highway In the summer Arthur Jenkins outhouse After all the kids were raised he built on to the house in the worked as a farmer, and in the 1950 's winter he worked as a property tax Since 3500 South was the mam assesor for 14 years During that road going west, the Jenkins family time he learned a lot about human not only witnessed an interesting nature as well as assessing properpassing parade of humanity, but ty, because there was a personal technology as well When they first property tax that caused women to hide their jewelry and other moved to the corner the road was only a dirt trail that was dusty in the valuables to avoid being taxes Art Jenkins also ran a binder to summer and muddy in the winter, but it later became a paved bind the wheat for his own and other thoroughfare that carried hundreds peoples wheat fields, and the kids of cars each day back and forth shocked the wheat (stood it up on end to keep the kernels dry) Both across the valley Among the Jenkins familys the boys and the girls took their turn in the fields recollections were those of the InAll of them learned early on the dians w ho came begging and trading right up into the late 1930 s, and the value of the middle class work ethic wandering Gypsies who pitched that has stood them in good stead totheir tents and parked their wagons day As soon as they were old enough in the middle of 8000 West for two they had chores to do that ranged davs Eddie Jenkins recalls that from hauling water for culinary use after the Gpsies left he found $5 in from the pump in the yard, cutting quarters in the dust where they had wood, gathering eggs, feeding the set up camp chickens and livestock, and cleaning However, he said that the luckiest the chicken coop and the barn In the fields they not only shocked day of his life w hen he was a kid, was when he stood watching the threshing operations near the spot Continued on next page where the old Reams Store once stood And as he watched the four teams of horses that walked in circles to turn the drive line that operated the threshing machine he wished for some money, and there in the chaff he found a shiney new quarter which bought him two ice cream cones, with a nickel left to save EdMarian Jenkins Griffiths; back, from left, Ken, Clarence, die, Florence (Floss) Jenkins Harvey, Ada, Vernon, Alice Jenkins Anderson, Evard (Jeff).
