Show fourth through sixth grade students at West Kearns are focusing atten- tion this month on the effects of substance abuse. Films will be shown, discussions held in classrooms and units presented during health periods. A poster contest is to be held, with the posters made during art classes, and an assembly will be presented by Valley junior highs Safety Kids. The project is in conjunction with said principal Jerry Pulsipher. It is imperative that our youth learn of the harmful effects of even experimenting with these deadly substances, he said. The health facts are coming in proving that substance abuse is taking the lives of our youth as well as maiming the bodies of future children. We want the youth to learn they are in charge of what they take into their bodies. Hopefully the facts will not scare them, but will help them to realize the consequences before it is too late. Part of the goal also involves the Positive Action program which has been in use at the school the past two years. 0 The program involves a minute period daily in every class, designed to improve said the principal. A series of 139 lessons are presented during the year, many involving unfinished stories. The story is told then children and teacher discuss it, and also discuss the various possible endings, seeking the most positive in each case. We feel a positive self image will enable young people to make decisions based on knowledge rather than on the best way to get attention from parents or peers, said Pulsipher. The challenge is great. We accept our part in solving this societal problem, but do so with the knowledge that what students do outside of school has a greater impact upon their lives and the life they w ill choose to live in the future. Our plea to parents and friends is to provide the best possible atmosphere for these children. When we all work together, lives can be changed for the better, the principal concluded. self-estee- Kindergarten To Register At Granger program at West Kearns elementary will teach youngsters like Jason Pearson (left), Andrea Jray and Dialntha Powell to dare to say no. . .
