Show 2B THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, March 19, 1987 e From Valley Junior High Bn D Talent Fair To Open At West Lake Tonight - Safety Kids Perform GRANGER. A talent fair will be held from 6 to 8:30 tonight (Thursday) at West Lake junior high. Every department in the school will be involved in showcasing talents found in the various areas, At Elementary Schools GRANGER. Five girls from Valley junior high are becoming popular throughout the area for their presentation of the Safety Kids, a Jeanine Brady skit designed to teach youngsters how to say no to drugs. Kim Ennis, Xaidia Newey and Amy Short, ninth grade, along with eighth graders Christine Bryner and Erin Terry, visit elementary schools in Granite and Jordan districts to give their presentations under the direction of Valley teacher Dick Cannaday, who originated the program as a way of helping children to avoid drug and alcohol abuse. The presentation involves several songs, including If You Think Your Friends In Trouble, Designer Jeans and All You Gotta Say Is No, which are choreographed by the students, mostly using improvisations, said Miss Ennis. The elementary school children respond well to the skits, she said, and ask lots of questions of the young singers. The group presents at least one program per week, sometimes more, she said, rehearsing before and after school and making up work time lost through presentations. It's a lot of work, but its a lot of fun, she said. We hope the program is successful in reaching children at a young age and giving them the goal of not becoming involved in said principal substance abuse, Dan Talbot. SAFETY KIDS . . . HEADLINES by Lory Anderson Granger high students last week experienced what many people dont ever have the chance to do - - the islands of Polynesia. The miracle of the matter is that they did not even have to buy airplane tickets for the trip. The Polynesian students from Granger and other local high schools got together to produce an assembly aimed at teaching students the different cultures of the Polynesian islands. You see, everyone seems to think that anyone with brown skin is either a Tongan or a Samoan. This isnt true and we are going to show you the differences. This statement opened up the show. Welcome to Polynesia. Students were greeted with the aroma of coconut oil, the sights of colorful straw flowers and costumes and stunned by the rythmic, thundering heartbeats of primitive drums. The beat hypnotized the crowd, making for a well received assembly. The island of Fiji, Hawaii, Samoa and Tonga were visited. Costumes of great color and brilliance caught the attention of all. Bright reds, brilliant yellows and sea water greens helped to set the mood of the "paradise islands. Hula dancing was my favorite, commented one senior as he left the auditorium Friday, referring to the hip swinging dance so commonly referred to as Hawaiian. One very interesting fact is that the students who helped to organize the assembly were not required by any means to produce such a performance. It their idea. We just want everyone to understand a little better, our culture and our heritage, was one comment. Many hours of practice went into the assembly. It was common for the students to stay after school for many hours practicing the new chants and dances. Many stayed after school every day of the week. That is a lot of practicing. On behalf of the entire student body, thank you for sharing your beautiful culture and heritage with the rest of us. Thank you for caring. Last of all, thank you for aiding in a better understanding of the world around us. Now, on with the continuing sage of As the Classroom Spins. In our last few episodes, Lance and Gurt seemed to be getting along. Things have changed. Its a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day to be a neighbor.
