Many feel this job repugnant, but isnt it a necessity? Without we would all be responsible for disposing of our own trash. Garbagemen lift up to 250 pounds a can. They visit around 700 homes a day, about 85 homes an hour or three homes a minute. Thats if they dont have to take time to dig boxes and frozen or wet garbage out of peoples cans. Or if they dont have to pause long enough to clean up spilled garbage from torn sacks. Sometimes they work with danger because we put motor oil in milk bottles ( it isnt even allowed at the landfill; certain service stations will take it for you) and the bottles burst under the packer. Milk bottle lids fly out at rocket speeds. Sawdust injures eyes; hot ashes burn. In fact, there have been instances where the whole load had to be dumped on the street because of the heat. These men empty cans with mice, flies and maggots; rotted fruit and n They work in zero temperatures, in rain and snow or hot humid sumemr days. They get Christmas, Thanksgiving and the 4th of July off, but work Saturday to catchup. If we took on the garbagemans job for week, we, the resident, would soon learn some helpful hints that would make his job easier. We would tie limbs and branches etc. in four-foo- t bundles. Wed put ties on garbage bags. We would limit the can weights and sizes to 44 gallons or smaller, with strong, sturdy handles and lids that keep animals and wet weather out. We wouldnt use cheap cans that shatter when frozen, or load up large appliance boxes. We would flatten all boxes to two feet by two feet and cut our Christmas tree to four-foo- t lengths and learn to use our disposals or compost piles for wet garbage. We would agree not to throw out batteries and tires. We wouldnt stack garbage between parked cars or wait to back out of our driveway when the truck is headed toward us. The trucks carry 51,000 pounds of garbage when loaded. It takes a mite more time to stop those $50,000 trucks. Yes. its a repulsive job to many and it takes a special person to do it, someone who is strong, willing to put up with gross attrocities, work long hard hours and come back for more. Help your local garbageman this holiday season. Flatten Christmas boxes and bundle them up. Be sure not to miss your holiday pick-uday, it means more work, more weight and more hours for him the next week. Have it on the curb by 7 a.m. A big thanks to the workers in the sanitation companies and a very Merry Christmas. p BYU Gridders Lake City. The traditional pantos were not to be missed. Whether you were 9 or Little Red Riding Hood, 99, Dick Whittington Cinderella, or some other fairy tale, presented as lavishly as any Broadway musical, would be high on your list of musts during those January days. Winter also meant dressing for the rainweather, with fisherman-typ- e coats, hats and Wellington boots, plenty of woollen scarves and sweaters, and warm gloves. It meant going to bed in a room so cold there was ice on the windows Mother placed hot bricks, wrapped in flannel, to warm the bed before you ventured upstairs, and then to use to warm your feet. You undressed, if you were smart, by the fire, then ran for it, up the stairs, down the hall, into the bedroom and with a flying leap, under the covers. And in the morning, warmed a penny by the fire, to hold against the window and melt circles in the ice patterns, so you could peep out at the frozen world beyond. Dad banked the fire to burn slowly all night so the main rooms would LEGAL NOTICES 700 700 over all activities ot tne district. except that, as provided bv law. the City Council may delegate to an administrative control board established under the Ut.ih Special Service District Act. or lo designated officers or employees (who may. but need not be, officers or employees of West Jordan.
