Show 4B THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, July 24, 1986 Milestones West Valley Couple Trade Vows On July 18 Pioneer Ancestors Or Not . . . Have A Good Holiday ' vs. y This time of year everyone who has LDS ancestors, who even look like pioneers, gets them out, dusts them off and starts bragging. It's good clean fun. Me all know what we're doing and there's no harm done. t win ( f vj ring ceremony at the LDS church on James Carl Lerdahl II of Kearns claimed Paige Peterson of West Valley City as his bride in a double- - A July A 18. reception was held that same One, a lad of 14, herded cattle to pay for his trip and inasmuch as the cattle stirred up a lot of dust, they were the very last of the long, long line. He knew, first hand, what eating dust meant and was known to remark that "ies, I w alked across those plains, it was one long walk. Took me years to cough up all that dust." I know enough local history to realize there certainly were dangers, deaths and heroes back in those days, but if any of those old timers could hear the wonderful tales' we tell, I betcha theyd shuffle their feet and take a sheepish look around just to make sure who we 're talking about. I have sometimes been bored while flying across those same plains, and I can see what he meant. Sounds as if somewhere between the South Platte and Salt Lake he often hoped Brigham could have found a handier place to tle. Peterson were Charisty bridesmaids. set- Helpers with the gifts were Maxine Jackman, Cami Richards, Dallas Gilmore and Danny Lund. Another side of my family is pure Svenska. Gramp sold everything he owned, loaded up his family and headed for Utah. It took such a long time . So much that was precious had to be left along the way, and finally, so hard to make their way in a "strange country with a "strange " language . Ethel Ringbearer was Wyatt Gilmore and attending the guest book was LaRue Gilmore. Best man duties were performed by Dee Jackman with Steve Richards as usher. Probably enough to make the strongest man say, as he has been quoted as saying, "By golly (or the Swedish equivalent ) I've half a notion to " turn right around and go back home again." m Bradford But, of course he didn't. Couldn't afford the second trip, for one thing, so he stayed right here, worked, earned a living, raised his family and helped make this valley as lovely as you and I now find it. Another ancestor (of my children) came a bit 1620, to be exact and on the Mayflower. Me have no words of his except the pious, stilted phrases that sound like some dry, long, boring Sunday sermon. earlier. In Each year, the tales get taller. The poor, d Indian who finally screwed up enough courage to beg something to eat from a pioneer home, becomes, with repeated tellings, more and more dangerous. And, by golly, it was nothing but Grandma 's bravery that kept the entire family from being scalped and killed right there and then. half-starve- re-te- ll Hosting parties were Tena Miller, Kari, Parry and Pat Lerdahl, Gayle Walton and Cori Hanson and LaRue Gilmore. t pre-nupti- al Music was furnished by Marva Packer. is u West Valley Is Home For The New Steven J. So doubt often wished he'd chosen to hang around for the third or fourth trip after much of the initial work was done. Yup, pioneers or pilgrims, whenever or. where ever, were just people. Same as me, same as you. And whether you have an LDS ancestor on this Pioneer Day or don't have an LDS ancestor, it doesn't matter. Have a happy holiday. Youve couple of my ancestors took the 'waiking tour" here and it was no pleasure filled trip. Some of their remarks have been remembered and grinned over through the years. Makes them a lot more human. .1 M ty- eager beaver So, they were the same as us. A little bit of good mixed with an awful lot of devilment. Sometimes one side winning, but, on other days, the other side in the driver's seat. 2 The newlyweds honeymooned at Jackson Hole, Wyoming and will make their home in West Valley Ci- But I'd bet even money that many a time the good Governor got sick and tired of constantly keeping one eye open for food so they wouldnt starve to death and the other eye open for Indians who might be getting tired of those dang w hite people who were building a town right on their shore line. It 's comforting to our pride to the good, brave things our ancestors did, but just because they came here "before the railroad" doesn't make them heroes and saints.
