With three victories against one loss, Taylorsville kept itself in good position for a post season berth in American Legion baseball. Taylorsville blasted Murrouted ray last Wednesday 12-- Skyline Thursday 10-- 1 SouthWest and fell to Friday, Brighton Monday and blanked Highland Tuesday. On Friday, Taylorsville will be at Jordan, Monday at Midvale and Wednesday at home with East, all three games set for 6 p.m. Taylorsville 6, Highland 0 Rick Capps went the full seven innings against Highland, giving up just fifth hits. Taylorsville had nine hits including a triple by Todd Wilberger and a double by Kevin Newby. Taylorsville picked up a run in each of the first three innings of play then added three more in the sixth. Brighton 5, Taylorsville 4 Devin Kunz got Brighton off to a 11-- 0 4 6-- 0 homer in good start with a two-ruthe first, but Taylorsville added three runs In the bottom half of the inning on a home run by Newby and a single by Tom Gallegos. Brighton tied with a run in the third on a double by Ed McDaniel and a single by Randy Wilstead. Brighton posted the winning edge with two runs in the fifth on singles by Wilstead, Alex Mercer, Kunz and Kelly Snarr. Taylorsville got to within a run in the bottom of the with a run off singles by Dave Trevion and Ryan Brown. n Don Emery pitched the distance for Brighton, giving up eight hits. Brighton had 10 hits. Taylorsville 7, Tooele 0 Dave Littlewood struck out six in pitching into the fifth inning before being relieved by Ed Yack. Both teams had five hits in the contest. A sacrifice fly by Brown got things A0Mark Produces Title started in the bottom of the first then Newby hit an RBI sacrifice in the second. Newby and Clements had RBI singles in a two run fourth. In the sixth, Treviono and Roberts sacrificed in a run each and a third scored on an error. Taylorsville II, SouthWest 0 Shane Patrick pitched the first four innings with Mark Tolbert coming on in relief in the fifth. Together, they surrendered only three hits. Taylorsville ended up with eight hits. A Taylorsville opened last Tuesday, July 15, by swamping visiting Woods Cross 16-- as S. Peterson pitched a no hitter. Taylorsville belted out 13 hits, as Christensen had a double and a triple and S. Peterson a triple. Bingham beat Murray by the same score 16-- 0 with pitcher Smock giving up just three hits, while his offense collected 15. In a much closer conwith test, Cyprus edged Holladay Sadler on the mound and doubles at the plate by Baumgarer and Lamb. Geertsen, Seagle and Stonebreaker had doubles for Hollady. In other July 15 action, Granite stopped Alta 4 with doubles going to Lambson, Vesser and Applemate for Granite, while Scott had a home run and a double for Alta. On the following Thursday, Hollascoring two day nipped Hillcrest runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie then move ahead. Kearns won by forfiet of Brighton and Granger fell TAYLORSVILLE. City and county division Automotive Baseball teams wrapped up the final week of regular season play with Taylorsville finishing in the top spot of the county division with a perfect 17-- 0 record, adding three more wins to its credit. As of July 19, West Jordan was next at 17-- 1 followed by Kearns 12-- Hillcrest 11-- Brighton 0 11-- Bingham 10-- Granger Murray and Alta Cyprus was second in the the Granite at city division, while Holladay was eighth at The top 16 teams, by record, in both divisions advance to state tournament action which opens Saturday at Ken Price in Murray, Winski (Southridge Park) in Kearns and Magna Community Park, where it will remain for two days. It will then be staged for a day at Ken Price and Magna and run Thursday through 5-- 3 8-- 7-- 0, 9-- double by Mark Roberts and and a passed ball scored two runs in the first. Gines had a double for Granite. Hillcrest took the measure of Skyline outhitting Skyline with Bergstrom, Freeman and Crossman each stroking doubles. Grangers American Legion record slipped to after a one-ru- n victory over last Wednesday, a Bingham heartbreaking loss to Hillcrest set back Friday and a humbling to Granite Monday (See Granite story). Granger hopes to shake off the tough losses Friday, but it wont be easy against Kearns in an 8 p.m. game at Winski Field. Monday, Granger hosts West Jordan and Wednesday Cyprus, both game set for6p.m. 10-- 7 7 13-- 5 Hillcrest 8, Granger 7 Shane Whitehead beat a toss to the plale to score the winning run in the top of the seventh. He had singled to get aboard then moved ahead on an error, a walk and a bunt by Tom Rhinehart. Granger did all its scoring in the first two innings, with two runs in the top of the first off a single by Kelly Peterson and a passed ball. Five more were posted in the second off a sacrifice by Mike Harmon, a two-ru- n single by Steve Embley and RBI singles by Scott Dalton and Peterson. Hillcrest picked up a run in the first on a single by Dave Swapp and added four runs in the second off a sacrifice by Rourke McMorris, a two run throwing error and a sacrifice fly by Shane VanKomen. Granger shot ahead with five runs in the second as Dalton singled in two, Fratto basehit in another, and a balk and passed ball added two more. Rob Martin singled to score Binghams second run in the top of the fifth. Peterson pitched the first six innings with Chuck Crowton finishing in the seventh and getting the win. Both teams finished with eight hits.
