Monday Though nights audience was smaller than Grovers Corners itself, those on a i !K& hand at Pioneer Memorial Theatre were treated to a suberb slice of American theater. Thornton Wilders Our Town is indeed an American classic. It won a Pulitzer Prize and it offers a combination of warmth and humor while packing a powerful message. Most of us have seen it a number of times. Every high school theater teacher worth his salt has offered Our Town. I was in it myself in college. But this PMT offering, at least for me, offered something unique. You see, I had never seen Our Town presented by a professional troupe, complete with mature adults playing roles written for mature adults. The PMT production is not only filled with mature adults in those roles, director Charles Morrey has assembled an incredible amount of talent. When you see Robert Peterson in a supporting role and Max Robinson in a bit part, you begin to get a picture of what is in store for the audience. The show should really draw more than the smattering of people who were on hand Monday night. It is truly excellent. Richard Mathews, who delighted Salt Lake audiences in On Golden Pond, filling the lead role, returns as the Stage Manager. He has a folksy manner that draws the audience right into Grovers Corners. It was them more than anyone who made me appreciate the maturity of the performances in sharp contrast to other productions I have seen. Each is very motherly, and both Monday thru Saturday are very proper. They add their own characterization, but its hard to think of one without the other coming immediately to mind. Their performances may be the strongest in the production. Flat Rate Max Robinson is very much under control as Simon Stimson.
