Granger park was acquired through great effort and expense by the Granger Lions club, beginning in 1951 and serves its intended purpose well. I ask those who feel so strongly in want of a new city hall to realistically state why. Surely, if a new city hall proves needed, a site location less expensive, less prominent, will serve our needs just fine. To the editor, At a meeting the other night while discussing what the future holds for the Magna Library, one of those present related a story about her daughter who, while trying to fulfill an assignment to write a report on Geneva, Switzerland, found that our current 3500 square foot library held very little useful information. Knowing that President Reagan was just returning from the recent summit meetings in Geneva, she RickEvertsen wrote a letter to him explaining that West Valley City since she could not fulfill her assignment at the local library and since he had just returned from there, would Mr. Reagan please write and tell her what Geneva was like. This is both wonderful and sad -wonderful that some of our children are resourceful enough to try different approaches to problem solving, yet sad that a library put here to serve us with information cannot even give a young person enough to write a report for school. Are you aware that we in Magna are short changing our children and ourselves? Perhaps not many of you have even visited the Magna Branch Library and I would urge you to do just that; visit the library put here to serve the children and adults of Magna, and then while youre traveling around the valley, stop in at the Whitmore, Holladay or Granger Libraries and ask yourself, "Where are the tax dollars that we pay being spent? Let me share with you some information you might not be aware of and will find both interesting and upsetting. The library system is set up as a separate taxing district and is a part of your property taxes. The average per capita revenues county wide are $14 85 in 1985, while the per capita revenues in the Magna area are $26.65. That is $26.65 for every man, woman and child from 7200 West to the Oquirrhs. How that money is spent is the part that distresses me as one who is raising a family here. The average per capita expenditures county wide for the library system are $16.05 (meaning that there are some higher than that level). Again, for every man, woman and child in Magna the amount of money spent by the Salt Lake County Library ' Sytem is $3.52. f What does the library board have for us in the future? While other locations in the county have free standing libraries that have approximately 12,000 square feet, we have . been told that we should accept their offer of expansion (from 3,500 to 7,000 square feet) at the same location. a location that is currently across busy streets from the majority of residential areas in Magna, in the center of a busy shopping-offic- e complex with no handicap access and, at best, dangerous pedestrian access We of the Magna Community Council would like you to join us in requesting the Library Board to leave the present library alone, taking the money set aside for expansion and combine it with other funds g to build a library with good handicap, pedestrian and motorist access. What we want for our children is the same that is provided in other parts of the valley by the tax dollars we pay. Darrel G. Johnson Magna Community Council Fork, first; Cedar City, second; Uintah, third. Division C, Panguitch, first; South Sevier, second; no third place awarded. The showmanship award went to Bountiful high. Awards for overall excellence were presented to, Bountiful, first; Union, second; and Jordan, third. schools participated in Thirty-tw- o the competition. ES Factory Outlet SDQsl Though I was unable to attend the public meeting, may I share my views via this letter Ub recebt coverage of this issue, why is it that no elected representative nor a news reporter states why we so desperately need a new Is there someone out city hall there that truly believes a new and expensive, centrally located city hall will provide more efficient and better service to the people of West Valley City At the last public meeting (according to the Green Sheet), one in favor of the site suggests the council must be logical as this city hall is the house place of the people. As if we were building a temple unto the Gentiles. City hall is a work place for employees, elected officials and appointees. Their purpose for being there is to serve the interests of the people of West Valley City. Another advocate states it is centrally and prominently located and presents the opportunity for multiple use in its finest form. To assume that a centrally located city hall would be more responsive to the paying citizens in questionable. Would Washington, D. C. be less bureaucratic and more responsive if it were centrally located in Nebraska.. Prominent, (according to this writers dictionary) means jutting out; projecting. Who needs that Opportunity for multiple use in its finest form sounds nice, but what room for what multiple use is allowed when percent of the park is taken up by the new city hall Another in attendance recommended the city buy property on 2200 West for the city hall.
