Twenty years ago a federally-funde- d program aimed at helping K ' x , , disadvantaged children prepare for a successful experience in school was founded. Today the Head Start program is going strong in the Salt Lake area and continues to grow. This school year the Granite Head Start opened another preschool program in its area encompassing Granite, Jordan and Murray school districts. Alta View elementary in Sandy became the seventh school to offer Head Start to eligible four and The program is comprehensive in its services. Children and their families have available to them a staff including a psychologist, social workers, child development specialist, speech therapist and nurse. Preschool exams such as dental and vision are offered. Alta View Head Start teacher Linda Sanderson explaiuned that referrals for other services are also available. They are taught skills to help them use complete sentence structures and work to Increase vocabulary. Activities encourage she added. Part of the enrichment experience includes field trips. Alta Views children have visited such places as Hardees and Village Inn as well as the Tracy Aviary. This fall included field trips to a pumpkin patch and the canyon. Both morning and afternoon sessions are served a hot lunch as part of the program. Mrs. Sanderson explained that the children are also as much taught to be as is possible. Hopefully the children- will find that learning is fun and that they can feel good about themselves, she said. That way they will enter the regular school system with a positive outlook on education. Creating an interest in learning and enriching a childs development and experience are major goals for those involved in Head Start programs. But enrichment experiences do not stop with the child. Pandy Warder, educational director of Granite Head Start, pointed out that unlike most preschool programs, the Head Start preschools attempt to effect changes within the family also. As part of the process, a mother or another member of the family is asked to volunteer to help once a month at the school. During that time the family member is gaining skills that can be used to help the child at home. Mrs. Warner explained that teachers cannot teach the children all they need in the three hours they are in school. With the parent involved, better and faster results are obtained. Parenting skills are also taught. Students In an annual Computers Match Couples For Dance UNION. A computer was used to Valley and pair students at Jordan Hartvigsen schools for a dance that was held at Jordan Valley. More than 250 students and staff members from the two schools were involved, according to a spokesman for Jordan Valley. Jordan Valley and Hartvigsen serve mentally handicapped students in Jordan and Granite districts. The event involved an exchange in which from Jordan Valley were matched with a student from Hartvigsen. The computer paired the couples by matching students of similar ages, ability levels and interests. The couples then took a tour of Jordan Valley school after which the dance was held. The computer dates then shared lunch together, The event ended with a break dance contest where the men were able to show off their dancing abilities to their computer dates. Officials at both schools hailed the third annual affair as a success.
