Show gg WEST VALLEY VIEW SAYS SHE by Michele Bartmess BYU coed joke: Q: One only had to watch Miss At least they are in that instance. Lynn Lambert is the com-plet- e antitof every BYU coed hesis joke that has ever been or will ever be conceived. Beautiful, brilliant and the One of the greatest assets a person can have is a sense of humor. BYU psychol- ogy major charms just about everyone she meets. The BYU coed jokes are out of the same mold as the old Polish jokes. They depict Brigham Young University women as being fat, dumb and ugly. A typical Wednesday Night despite the fact that I not only spent four years being one, I also probably fit more Into the joke mode than the Miss Utah variety. In fact, most of the jokes are funny. Theyd be even more amusing if they were about UofU coeds, I guess, but who can deny that theyre awfully clever? I even have a personal favorite: Q : What did the stream say when the BYU coed fell in? A: Well, Ill be dammed. I didnt know Grace Whitaker when I was at the Y, but I think I would have liked her. Certainly I would have admired her nose for business. Grace has compiled a publication entitled The Unofficial BYU Coed Joke Book. It has created quite a stir in recent weeks. Like me, Grace was once a BYU coed. Evidently not one of the dumb variety, she is, in fact, listed as a graduate. After being out of state for awhile, she returned to be bombarded with BYU coed jokes. Whats the difference between garbage and a BYU coed? A: The garbage at least gets taken out once a week. Because of entrance requirements, I dont know how many Y women are dumb, at least academically, but common sense tells you that in any gathering of more than 13,000 women, some are going to be more and less beautiful than others. Obviously, there will be those who fit the jokes to a T. And there will be an equal number of Lynn Lamberts. Plus a whole bunch in between. Utah perform Saturday night at the Miss Murray Pageant to realize that the BYU coed witticisms are slightly off base. talented, When that includes the ability to laugh at oneself or station in life, its so much the better. It takes the sting out of a lot of things. Ive never found the BYU coed jokes to be all that offensive, Rather than turn up her nose or hyperventilate, Grace Whitaker saw an opportunity. She compiled 227 of the more tasteful (translation: not dirty) jokes into the aforementioned book, having 5,000 copies printed at her own expense. Our alma mater evidently saved her the expense of a big adver- Using campaign - with a little help from the news media. The headlines screamed that the book was banned at the BYU bookstore. Which made it an extremely hot item at the UofU. Now sometimes, believe it or not, newspapers get things a little mixed up. Unfortunately for you, the reader. In this case, fortunately for Grace, the author. The book was not actually banned. It seems that the bookstore management simply chose not to stock the book, a decision that has been backed by the ad -- GRANGER. - Spring Is Bustin Granger South stake center. Although I havent seen the book, Ive heat'd that enough of the jokes to realize it would make for a good laugh. And we just dont seem to get' enough of those lately. I suspect, given the number of books that are published each week, there are one or two others that the bookstore has chosen not to stock. In fact, a university spokesman said that ethnic humor is out. Period. But this one got the attention, because of its obvious tie. Grace was, however, able to place her book at some markets near the campus, as well as at some other major bookstores in that county.
