Some claim good ancestors is the only secret . . . others cite living in a rural area where the stress and strain is small. Many tell that leaving liquor and tobacco alone is the prime requisite, while the very next long-life- r will swear that moderate smoking and a bit of wine each night is the best thing in the world for longevity. Each person may have their own reason, but this week I went to an expert . . . Ariel Benson of Holladay, and asked him the hows and wheres of reaching into ones 80s and still being hale and hearty. Being busy must be part of his answer to the question because he laughed as he answered that, I dont know why I still enjoy life so much, and to tell the truth, I suppose Ive been too busy to even wonder about it. The octogenarian just recently received his Silver Beaver Scouting award which tells he has been active with that group for over 50 years. And that is only one of dozens of other hobbies and jobs he has mastered. Oh, he tells, Ive nver been large or especially robust, but Ive always been conscious of my body and tried to keep it in the best health possible. And theres been nothing special about my routine except I dont drink or smoke and Ive worked hard all my life. This remarkable man began his work-lif- e early as the result of an incapacitating accident that happened to his father. He was born in Newton, Cache County, Utah, the descendant of Danish people who arrived here as converts to the LDS church. They were dairy farmers there and so Ariel learned from childhood up how to do the chores that such a life demands. After the upheaval In the family life that his fathers accident brought about, it fell upon his shoulders to do what he could to keep the family together. It was then, he recalls, "I took over the daily milk run. I was but 16 years old, but every morning, every day of the year, winter or summer, I got up at 5:00 a.m. and harnessed the horses to drive out and gather up the milk from the farms in the area and then deliver it to Smithfield for processing. It was a hard job. I drove 8 miles to Smithfield and 8 miles back from Smithfield. In the summer I used a wagon and in the winter the horses pulled the large sleigh. My mother was busy helping my father cope with the accident and the other children, so the milk run was up to me. There was no other way. I only finished the 8th grade in school because I would have had to leave home for further schooling, and that couldnt be because I was needed at home. While that was the end to his formal education, his continuing education has never stopped. During the Intervening years he has repaired shoes, managed a grocery store, learned upholstering (which he stilll loves to do) been active in community affairs wherever he has made his home, joined the Lions club, been voting district chairman and then finally retired from Hill Air Force Base. I married late in life, he shares, and perhaps having such a young wife has helped keep me young. It was in World War II, while serving in England that I met Irene Hawke in Plymouth, and it was there we married. I was 42 at that time. He and Irene became the parents of five children, Robert, Lawrence, Joy, Heatherly and Kerry, and are now grandparents to fifteen. he continues, But, being healthy, to me, is a frame of mind. And nothing on earth can bless you with a happier frame of mind than living a spiritual life. The LDS church means an awful lot to me in that way and Ive filled four missions for them, one full time in Pennsylvania, one in Texas when I lived there and two stake ones, one in California and the other here in Salt Lake. Scouting and working with young boys is a great love of Ariels life. He began back in 1933 and hasnt stopped yet. I plan to remain with scouting as long as I can for there is nothing more important than training of young people. They are going to be the leaders of tomorrow, and whether they do a good or bad job of leading, depends upon what kind of training we give them today. Its far easier, he adds, to mold a boy than to change a man, and thats what Boy Scouts is all about. Whatever the secret is to Ariel Bensons productive, long life . . it works for him. Several major surgeries have come his way but he has always snapped right back and been as good as ever. Events have come to him, like the accident of his father, that have changed his life drastically, but still he has coped with these events and positively. We could all take a lesson from Ariel Benson. He is a true example of zestful living from youth right into his eighties. Alive, happy, active, anticipating what comes next. What life always could , . . and should ... be for all of us - a joy. Upholstering has been a part of Ariel Benson's busy life for many years and his shop, today, is still filled with projects he is working upon. Tke "Htuifi-jwtjKw- Uwi e" BEwt Com Pwhfltt U? projects.
