A developer who wants to put a shopping center on the northwest corner of 3500 South and 5600 West will have to wait at least three more weeks for approval from the City Planning Commission. Walt Gasser, who is seeking a conditional use permit for the area, spoke to the commission for more than an hour Thursday, using an elaborate mixture of charts, slides and video equipment to support his case. The basic dispute over landscaping and parking problems remained unresolved however and the commission voted to delay the decision until Oct. 13. Edgar Todd, commission chairman. told Gasser hes worried most about the proposed parking plan for the site, which calls for perpendicular parking directly in front of the shops. Perpendicular parking in this situation would force cars to back into the main traffic corridor and that could cause some problems, he said. Todd said he also worried about the lack of space the parking plan would leave for the Fire Department, should it be called to fight a fire at one of the shops. We dont want them to have to climb over a row of cars to get to the fire, he added. Gasser told the commission that his parking plan would not be a problem and they need not go any further than their own front door for proof. The building were in right now (City Hall) has perpendicular there perimeter, he explained. is no problem here, there will not be one at our project either. Gasser also addressed commission concerns that he may not have an adequate plan for landscaping the back of the proposed development. It would be a waste of money to landscape the back of our project when only delivery men and garbage truck drivers would ever have the opportunity to appreciate it, he said. A conditional use application for a liquor sales license at the Oaken Bucket restaurant was approved despite the concern of one resident who felt that if this one goes through, all the restaurants in zones will follow. The matter now goes before the City Council, which, in turn, will pass it on to the State. 34-1- 4 five-gam- 23-2- 0 wun in '81, 28 20 ANNIVERSARY SALE Kent authorization from the council to vacate Pleasant Valley subdivision plat B and subdivide a portion of it as Circle Tree subdivision plat A.
