Show 3 WEST VALLEY VIEW Thursday, Sept. 'Defense Dominates 29, 1983 - Pirates Earn 12-- 0 Victory Over Farmers In Classic MAGNA. Lightning, which was clearly visible from the Cyprus high football stadium throughout Fridays night contest, struck Granite twice and the Pirates emerged with a Homecoming victory. It was a classic defensive struggle on both sides of the gridiron, but the Pirates were able to capitalize on two key Farmer miscues. Cyprus will remain at home for a contest tomorrow (Friday) that could determine the playoff fate of both the Pirates and Cottonwoods Colts. The Colts are coming in and are badly in need of a win. Cyprus, which takes Wednesdays UEA day off, faces Olympus and Skyline in its last tests and needs a ;iwin over Cottonwood to stay alive in 'the race for state. ; The Pirates capitalized on almost identical plays to down the Farmers. Granite quarterback Kreg Peterson must have thought he was wearing Pirate Mike Lances jersey. Late in the second period the transfer from Uintah hit Peterson as he set up to throw, forcing him to cough up the football. Greg Peterson picked it up and returned it to within two feet of the end zone to set up a sweep by A1 Kamidoi that gave the Pirate defense all the points it would need. An almost identical situation oc , 12-- 0 0-- 2 curred midway through the fourth period to give the Bucs some insurance. Lance again burst through and nailed Peterson. This time Greg Henson pounced on the fumble and, aided by a late hit penalty, Cyprus drove 23 yards to score. Shannon Bearden carried the ball up the middle for the clinching score. Both times the PAT failed, but the Buc defense, which recovered four fumbles and intercepted two passes, had covered itself with glory. Cam Smith and Brian Densley had recoveries and Cory Romell and Jon Sneddon picked off passes. Named player of the game for the Bucs were Lance and Cam Smith. Granite never got inside the Pirate 30. However, Granites defense was equally as stubborn. Cyprus had first and goal at the five and failed to score in the first period. After that, the Pirates got virtually nothing. They were 0x15 through the air and had 139 yards rushing - 130 by Kamidoi on 24 carries. Backed up near his own end zone, Coach Bill Hunter pulled a trick play out of his hat and that may have saved the day for Cyprus. On second and long after a penalty, Hunter called for a quick kick. Smiths punt rolled 76 yards and gave the Buc defense plenty of space to breathe. After what many consider an upset at the hands of Cyprus, about all Farmer Coach Mark Nielson can do is look ahead. And the Farmers should have their hands full this week as they face two teams in five days. Granite hosts Skyline for Homecoming tomorrow (Friday) at 3 p.m., then e plays West in a game Wednesday, two days earlier than normal, courtesy of UEA. The Farmers were able to gain only 77 yards on the ground and passed for the same amount. Andy Katoa was the leading rusher for Granite, picking up 53 yards on 12 carries. In the air, Peterson was 6x16 for 65 yards and two interceptions. He and Randy Casper, who started, were constantly rushed. One of the pickoffs was on the last play of the game as Peterson let it fly in desperation, but the other came at a crucial time. We were moving the ball in the third quarter and I thought wed come back, but we threw an interception, Nielson said. Its just like we kept making little mistakes here and little mistakes there. The defense played really well. They didnt give them much of he said. anything on defense, Everything Cyprus got was on fumbles. But Nielson wasnt overly pleased with the offense. (1). - MHS Heartbreak Continues As Judge Ciaims MURRAY. Judge Memorial defenders picked off a half dozen Murray passes Friday, including one in overtime that sealed a 4 victory for the visiting Bulldogs. Heartbreak continued to pile up for the Spartan squad, still winless in five starts. For the second straight week, the Spartans won the statistical battle, but one cannot afford to make mistakes against the Bulldogs Murray will face its third straight tough test tomorrow (Friday) at 3 p.m., traveling to West to meet a Panther team that has yet to taste defeat in five outings. UEA week will offer a break for Spartan grid-ders. Judge takes its league record 0 to Jordan where the Beetdiggers will celebrate Homecoming and the victor will hold a decided edge in the league championship race. At 7:30 Wednesday, Judge will host Skyline ' in a nonleague affair. Judges Jeff Burkley latched onto the ball a split second ahead of Murrays John Madsen Friday to bring a classic struggle to an end. The two wrestled for possession, but the official ruled that the Bulldog had intercepted. Spartan Coach Newell Roche, still positive about his teams ability to make the state playoffs, argued, but said later that while it was a judgement call, it was not a bad call. It was a game that Murray probably should have won, but one cannot discount the gritty defensive play of the Bulldogs who used only 13 players on both units. When they had to, the Bulldogs dug down and found something extra. The Spartans seemed in good shape - despite the fact that Judge scored a touchdown on the first play of the overtime period - when Craig Meredith blocked the PAT try. The Bulldog touchdown came on a trick play quarterback Tony Cordova iateralled to Paul Barbiero who tossed a scoring pass to Mike Liston, wide open in the end zone. Murray, just a touchdown and conversion away from victory, had an incomplete pass before the interception by Burkley. The Spartan defense was sensational in stopping Judges ground game cold, but two big plays on offense, coupled with the play of the Bulldog secondary, created the overtime situation. Murray took advantage of good field position in the first period to put seven points on the board when Rob Beck hooked up with Tim Blackburn on a five-yar- d pass play. Twice the Spartans were on the move after thwarting the Judge of 4 Charlie Brown. Roche named Troy Tuttle player of the game foi the Spartans. He also praised the play of Beck, Evans, Howe, Troy Sample, Meredith, Rasmussen and Madsen - along with the entire defensive line. Bulldog mentor Frank L'Etoile named Oppocher offensive player of the game for his punting John McCormick was back of the week with (See Page 4. Col 1: -- BRINTON'S IN MURRAY Murray looked like it would win when it took the ensuing kickoff and marched with great determination to the Bulldog 12, but Beck threw a pass he shouldn't have and Barbiero was there for the second time. A booming punt by Scott Oppocher and a Bulldog zone defense insured the overtime. The Spartans gained 377 yards, 266 through the airways on 19x37 completions to seven receivers. Madsen had five catches for 75 yards, Dave Howe four and Rasmussen three. Dave Evans was the leading rusher. Judge gained 191 yards through the air on 10x24 by Cordova and Barbenos game winner. Judge was limited to just 69 on the ground and had only nine first downs. Late in the second period, the Bulldogs finally found a seam in the Spartan defense, striking through the air. Cordova hit Marty Biljanic with a pass, with 1:11 left. Murray moved the ball well on the first possession of the second half, but again gave up the ball on an interception.
