My roots in this area go deep I have taught as many as four children in some families. Some, now grown and married, bring their children to visit me. - Commenting was Virginia Denhalter, who will retire this year from David Gourley elementary. Mrs. Denhalter has been at the Kearns school since 1959, the year it opened. Prior to that she taught at Roosevelt and Garfield, for a total of 30 years teaching in Granite district. A Salt Lake City native, she graduated from East high, then from the University of Utah at age 20. Jobs at that time were not plentiful, so, although certified to teach secondary school, she was asked to take a first grade class. She liked working with the children so much she acquired an elementary teaching certificate and stayed with the younger children throughout her career. Married to Melvyn C. Denhalter, who is deceased, she quit teaching for a time to have her family of three daughters, Susan Stevens and twins, Pat Judkins and Nancy Cropper. A shortage of teachers developed and she was asked to teach at the newly-opene- d Gourley school, where her sister was PTA president. "I wasnt sure I wanted to go back, but later, when my husband died, I was glad. It has been well worth the commuting to teach in Kearns. Teaching children to read is my RETIRING . . .
