TO ORGANIZE A NEIGHBORHOOD HATCH CONTACT YOUR AREA POLICE DEPARTMENT 266-508- CALL continuing inspection of residences. Neighborhood Watch is most effective when it involves people within a one or two block area. Residents can meet under the sponsorship of civic or church groups, but most programs are organized by unsponsored groups of concerned residents meeting in private homes. Working with police assistance The Neighborhood Watch program has two phases: instruction in how to cooperate with police and increasing the security of your own home. First, interested citizens are instructed in: (1) What to do if you are the victim of a crime (2) How to call for police assistance (3) How to spot unusual behavior that may indicate a crime is being committed (4) How to report a crime and adequately describe the behavior being observed Many people are reluctant to report unusual behavior because they fear they will be embarrassed or cause trouble for an innocent person. One objective of the program is assurance that this will not happen.
