Kearns high athletic director John Wood has been honored by Southern Utah State College for his exploits as an athlete 30 years ago. Wood was one of three Most Valuable Players of that period who were feted at an open house and halftime ceremonies. Wood was honored in basketball and track and field. Singled out in baseball was Sherm Lee of Draper and in football, LaMar Clark of West Jordan. Wood was a consistent winner for the track team in the pole vault, high jump and 220 and was a member of the 880 sprint relay team. He was also a regular on the basketball team as a guard and was an offensive and defensive end and punter on the football team and a baseball shortstop. He went on from Cedar, then a junior college, to play football and basketball at BYU. In basketball, the former Murray high athlete was an honorable mention jaycee GRANGER. Eight victories lifted 9 to a lopsided dual meet wrestling victory here Thursday over Olympus. The easy dual meet win for Coach Roger Ketchums Lancers came on 7 the heels of a much tougher triumph over West Jordan. Granger has its last dual meet today (Thursday) before the Region Three tournament Feb. 3 at Cyprus. The Lancers will be on the road at Granite for a 7:30 p.m. showdown. Olympus will wrap up its dual meet schedule at 7:30 tonight at Skyline. Even though injuries have ravaged the Lancer lineup, Ketchums club had little difficulty with Coach Mike Ptaschinskis Titans. The only wins for Olympus were Steve Whitney and pins by heavyweight Tyler Heyman (4:26), a 12-- major decision for Tadd Gygi (134) and a 13-- 7 decision for Pat Glaittli. Granger compiled the bulk of its total on pins by Paul Garcia (114), Richard Walker ( 128) and Dave Harrison (187), a win by default at 169 for Paul Lee and a superior decision for Steve Bradshaw (140). Recording decisions for the Lancers were Dino Rivera (105) 0 and Ron Tew (157) West Jordan proved a much tougher foe. Granger won just five of 12 matches but all were pins, including three in the last four matches. Thats what won it. Granger trailed 2 when Tew won by a fall in the first round of his match. After Lee dropped an 2 decision, Harrison pulled the Lancers to within three, going into the final match. The pressure was on Nutt, particularly when the heavyweight found himself on the bottom side of a 2 score with time winding down. But Nutt came through with a pin in the final 20 seconds to give the Lancers the decision. In the lower weights, valuable contributions were made by Rivera, who pinned Rod Simmons in 32 seconds, and Walker, who won by a fall in the second period Granger 41-1- 30-2- d won and conference sports. 3 in the honors all- other He currently serves as athletic director and golf coach and teaches driver education.
