Show 3 Thursday, Jan. 27, WEST VAUEY VIEW 1983 Grab Lead In Region State Title Chase - GLANCING BACK In sports . . . Foil SALT LAKE. All too often a game turns out to be a disappointment. Such was the case Friday night when Jordan brought its act to Judge. Hitting nine of their first 10 shots from the floor, the Beetdiggers buried the Bulldogs early, then d withstood two rallies to win Judge will try to rebound tomorrow (Friday) with a test of a hapless Tooele squad on the Judge court at 7:30. But the Bulldogs will have to be careful that they arent looking ahead to a West team that has been coming on stronger and stronger. Judge and West will tangle at West Tuesday in a 3 p.m. matchup. West must first, however, concentrate its energies on a matchup with Jordan for the league lead tomorrow. Coach Jim Yerkovich was obviously disappointed with Fridays outcome, not so much the losing, but the performance. I dont know if they really are that much better than we are or not. We didnt do too many things right when it counted most, he stated. But credit Hal Hale, he had that squad ready to play and they have incredible depth. Judge may have been affected by an intensive test week, but Yerkovich isnt excusing his teams performance. Even when we came back, it was only pride, we just werent mentally right, ever. Jordan outscored the host team 20-- 6 in the first period and continued to pour it on, leading 8 at halftime. Complementing their offense was the defense the Beetdiggers threw at the Bulldogs. When Judge outscored the visitors 13-- 2 in the first three minutes of the second half, it was a game again, but that was when Jordans depth highly-hype- d pride-motivate- 69-6- 39-1- January, sophomore Richard Holmes was having himself a game. 18 points (6, He scored a game-hig- h 6x9) and grabbed 18 rebounds. Pete Rokich had a steady performance with 14 points (6, 2x4) and 15 caroms. Greg Diedrich, harnessed offensively, had 13 rebounds. Weve never lost a game when we had 50 rebounds, Yerkovich moaned. The Bulldogs outboarded the Diggers Jordan countered Judge scoring with balance - three players in double digits, led by Curtis Hills 17 (5, 7x8). Mike Thompson added 15 (6, 3x5) and Gomez scored 10. Both teams had 25 field goals, but Jordan put the game away from the line, sinking 19x27, while Judge had 52-4- -- 11x21. The Judge big men will have their hands full with Tooeles Tim Norton, who leads the league with an 18.8 scoring average, while on Tuesday it will be Wests quickness that must be countered. d In a dual meet Thursday, Granite blasted Cottonwood 57-the only setback coming at 114 pounds where Colt Phil Diederich won by a pin in 1 :54. Otherwise, it was all Granite. Recording pins for the Farmers were Hola, Clark, Thomas and Blaine Burr. Wayne Burr, Salazar, Vialpando and Watson won superior decisions, Bown and heavyweight Greg Hatfield had decisions, and Bruce McLean won by forfeit. On Tuesday, Granite whipped Highland closing out the match decisively with five straight pins. Hatfield (2:42), Hola (1:07), Clark (3:51), Thomas (:27) and Monty Snow (3:47) each contributed six points with pins, as did Tracy Stokes (5:51). Also winning for Granite were Watson (16-4Randy Bown Vialpando (4-- 3 over Vaun Hall) and Blaine Burr (14-052-1- Line Calls Are Costly To Granite E. MILLCREEK. A free throw line violation is rarely called. To have two called in the final minute of a game can be deadly, as Granite Coach Dave Mascaro discovered Friday afternoon in a 8 loss to Skyline. With 53 seconds left Friday, Granite trailed the Eagles by one. In a span, Farmer guard Dave Abel was whistled for lane violations which wiped out successful front ends of two situations. At least two points were lost, maybe four. Those lost points, a subsequent turnover and clutch free throw shooting by Skylines Craig Bennett turned the spread into the final margin. The victory left Skyline comfortably atop the Region Three standings with a 0 mark and dropped Granite to 2 with a critical week ahead. Mascaras squad can retain a share of second place with a home-couvictory over Cottonwood tomorrow (Friday). As such, Mascaro hopes to shut off the running game and turn the contest into a patterned, half-couaffair. The Farmers played that type of game against Skyline after struggling through the first quarter against a Eagle defense. They trailed 0 after one period, but narrowed the margin to two at the half.
