Show Page 22—THE HERAI.D. Provo. Utah, Friday, Janzary11, 1980 Nephi Councilmen Take Oath NEPHI CITY COUNCIL NEPHI — Three new city councilmen were sworn in in Nephi City Council ceremonies. Robert R. Garrett and Ernest I. Wilson were sworn in by Nephi City Judge, Harlow Pexton in a noon hour ceremony Robert Steele was sworn in at the regular council meeting. The three new members of the council replace retired members Fenton L. Broadhead, A. Duane Sperry and Charles R. Mellor. Leon Pexton, Nephi businessman and airport patron, met with the city council to discuss the regulation of the airport. Pexton suggested the formation of an airport zoning board which would be made up of two appointed county represen- tatives and two appointed city representatives. The four would then select a chairman. It was suggested that the city discuss the matter of airport regulation with countyofficials. The county would probably wantto help protect the airport but should not be responsible for its regulation, Pexton stated. | Committee assignmentsfor the new city councilmen were made by MayorJ. Barres Jenkins who welcomed them and explained council procedures Committee assignments were: Gar- rett, Police and Fire ents, licensing and judiciary: Earl §. Jarrett, water, sewer and public health, elections and printing; Steele, sidewalks, landfill, and airport; Paul McPherson,electricity, city hall, building, finance and planning and zoning; Wilson, parks and cemeteries, recreation, library, beautification, Miss Nephi = city float x ed Anderson, city jer, passed out lists to the council of peaaie city needs Each councilman was asked to list his requests by priority. Anderson said that sincethe city operates on limited funds,it mustdetermine needs by priority in order to serve the mostpeople. This will be done for fiscal year 1980-81. Sincethe city offices handle such a large volumeof business, councilmen discussed the recommendation of the auditor that a new employee be hired to assist Faye Greenhalgh, recorder. It was felt that an assistant wasdefinitely needed. The council decided to hire an employee for thecity office staff In other business, the council: Discussed the purchase of a largetrailer to be used to haui the city’s large bulIdozer. Since the funds were available it was decided to let bids for the trailer. Approved a meeting between Utah Powerand Light and cityofficials. Thisis to be an informative meeting designed to explain power options in Nephi city regaining and maintaining its own electrical distribution system Granted business licenses to Ned H Worthington for warehousing, and to Alonz Rosehlof for coal delivery Approved the new sign to be erected in place of the old “Mr. Kwik” sign at Michelson's Drive Inn. Okayed the request for workshop training for somecity police officers. Discussed a billing problem with Ken Ware. Stated that anyonedesiring to meet with city officials at council meeting must be on the agenda. An agendawill be posted at City Hall. Anyone desiring to be on the agenda should call Anderson to be put on the agenda. The call should be made before noon of the Mondaybefore council Classes will be held on Jan. 17 and 24 from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Saturdays Jan 19 and 26 from 8 a.m.to 12 a.m.All adults and youth 12 or over areinvited. They have made outstanding motivational information available to families each year since then. All interested adults and secondary schoolstudents are encouraged to attend.
