Show DRY FARMING GAINING A HOLD IN THIS COUNTY thousands of acres to be seed ed on independence flat the emery county land company which is putting independence flat between perron and emery in shape for t an early day has ordered an 18 gang disc plow and 35 horse power traction engine of the minneapolis threshing machine company of which F F kenaston is president mr ken agton is vice president of the local land company just as soon as snow is gone the outfit will be put to work breaking ground on the flat for seeding to dry farming wheat oats and alfalfa one hundred and thirty acres were sown to kofford wheat and alfalfa seed this fall the company had a carload of montana white oats arrive at price a few days ago but superintendent G W laag turned down the shipment as not being as represented it is the desire to get the best white oats possible the grain of which is small and hard aud very much in demand for making breakfast foods that dry farming or partial dry farm ing is feasible on the flat is proven by the success of last year when acres were sown to wheat and lacem seed at the same time both were put in with a drill press seeder at a depth of five inches and all the seeding was done in the latter part of may only 35 acres were watered and no better result was obtained by the irrigating the company now controls nearly 14 acres making their undertaking one of the big land reclamation schemes of the state the main canal is about completed but there remains consider able work yet to be done on the 10 res seven of which are in the mountains and three on the flat |
