Coach Brad Hawkins has led the surprising record prior to this weeks action. For a Lancers to a team that wasnt supposed to win too many, Hawkins says, Im just as happy as can be for the kids. two-ru- n 7-- FULL OF SURPRISES After Layton had brushed off his team 3 last Friday afternoon, Roys Fred Thompson stared at the wall and shook his head saying, Those guys are for real. YES, THE Lancers are back again. After tying Clearfield last season for top honors in e Region One, the Layton squad is back in the drivers seat again. After four league games, the young and never-say-di- club highly inexperienced stands unbeaten and still hungry for more. "One thing is for sure, said Thompson. They can sure hit the ball with men on bases. I just hope we get the knack of it real soon. The Royals left the bases loaded twice against the Lancers and neither time invested in runs. LEADING THE way for Layton has been rookie head coach, Brad Hawkins, who Thompson described as a .baseball man through and through. There are people who know the situation in Layton better than I, but after watch- - re- spond to him very well, Thompson said. HAWKINS himself said he was surprised the team was 0 as of last weeks action, but added later he couldnt be happier for the kids he coaches. They do everything I tell them and more. The former Weber State and BYU athlete pointed out that anything could happen in this wild spring sport, but also added that if his kids keep gaining confidence like theyve done in recent games, then the Lan- cers could some day figure in a serious title chase. On the other hand, Hawkins says things could go totally opposite, but as he says, We like to think positive about it. PITCHING has been a surprise for Hawkins and probably more so than anything else. Joey Costello is 0 in league as is his senior team- fi- ' PIERCE HAS shown brilliantly on the defensive side of things too. With several games played now, Haw kins can remember only two errors committed by his third baseman. All this comes after playing only one varsity game last year and that was very early in the spring. Though off to a slow start at St. George, Brian Murray has finally exploded. His two-ru- n home run blast against Roy is one in a string of good things to boast about. His play at short stop has been adequate also. GETTING ON base with un- -' believable consistency has been second baseman Mike Bunting. His fielding hasn't been that bad either. Sophomore Kenny Health is another pleasant surprise for Hawkins who claims his young catcher just keeps getting better with each game that passes. Another senior, David Draper, has sparkled in relief. And Layton can hit the ball man to too. From the lead-of- f No. 9, every Lancer has had a hot bat in a still somewhat chill spring. was impressed with his hitting or the way he kept the ball in front of him, none the less, he was impressed. One of the leagues top outfielders has been Alan Gentry, especially in getting the ball back into the infield. Ken Cartwright has been a terror at the plate also. THE LIST goes on and on and hopefully the wins will too. But what will it take to win the league? There are still four games after this week's meetings with Sky View and tough Bonneville crew. SHOULD LAYTON lose both of their contests this week, they can at least be assured of a tie going into the final four games. Clearfield. Roy, Bonneville and Weber were all deadlocked with 2 marks after four outings. Bonneville was expected to glide through the region this spring, but Steve Gardners crew has had a tough venture in connecting with the ball at home plate. But perhaps they finally woke up after a doublefigure hitting effort against Sky View last Friday and an eventual 0 victory. I WAS talking to my assistant, Carter Cook, the other day and he commented back to me, that this was the first time that many of these kids had finally got a chance to really believe in themselves. Many of them didnt believe they could be leading the league at this point, said Hawkins. At first Hawkins found dis9-- Airman Donald G. Frazier. Mr. and Mrs. Donald G. Frazier of 1770 S. 200 E..
