Willie — Mays, of course —| is the barometer for the San Francisco Giants, and right now Willie is hot. So are the Giants. Mays shouldered much of the blamefor the Giants’ failure to Tepeat as the National League champions last season. He remembers how he slugged 10 home runs in the first month of the Giants’ championship year, in 1962, then slumped to a .232 batting average and only four homersin the first 30 days of the ’63 season. Willie’s slump, along with His teammates’, prompted Chub Feeney, the Giants vice president, to moan: “I’ve never séen so many guys play like they didn’t care about money.” Well, Willie does. And he’s out to prove he deserves his six - figure salary. Hits Third Homer The Giants’ centerfielder hammered his third home run in two’ days Wednesday night to ignite a 10 - run Giant spree which carried San Francisco to 4 10-8 triumph over Milwaukee. Mays has driven in six runs, scored three andall of his hits have been for the circuit in the Giants’ first two victories. Ken Boyer and Bob Gibson led the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers; Philadelphia whipped the New York Mets, 41, and Pittsburgh outlasted the Chicago Cubs, 5-4, in 12 innings. Big League Standings AHL Standings County, Utah Far-Flung Coast League To Get Season Underway Today By ELDON BARRETT United Press International SEATTLE, Wash. (UPI) — Members of the Pacific Coast League don their seven-league spikes today and Friday and set out on a 158-game_ baseball season with giant steps in a circuit that stretches nearly a sixth of the way around the world. And speaking of things being big, PCL president Dewey Soriano (who, incidentally, is by no means a midget of man) predicts that the 12-team league, which is bigger than ever and larger than any league in the game, will attract 1,750,000 fans, which would be about a quarter of a million more than turned the turnstiles last season. The league season opens today in its “fartherest reach,”’ Honolulu, with the Islanders entertaining the Bees of Salt Lake City. Friday Portland will be at Little Rock, Denver at San Diego, Tacoma at Dallas, Seattle at Indianapolis and Spokane at Oklahoma City. The teams are divided into two alignments with Arkansas, Dallas, Denver, Indianapolis, Oklahoma City and Salt Lake City in the eastern division, and Hawaii, Portland, San Diego, Seattle, Spokane and Tacoma comprising the Western Division. New membersare the Arkansas Travelers and the Indianapolis Indians. What used to be Dallas-Fort Worth now is just plain Dallas. Oklahoma City is the defending champion, having won over Spokanein the divisional playoff last season. But Indianapolis, the league’s easternmost team, comes into the PCL with three successive scalps from othercircuits on its belt—1961-62 in the American Association and last season in the International League. Every team has either a solid working agreement ordirect tie to a major league outfit and the PCL “should have fine balance and the league’s prestige should reach a new high.” “As for the executive end of the operation,” he added, “never in my association with the league at that level—going back to 1953—have wehadfiner executive talent.” BYH; Memory, Springville. Wings,Leafs Play Tonight DETROIT (UPI) — Sid Abel, general manager - coach of the Detroit Red Wings, plans to use his “new defense” again tonight when the Wings host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third game of their best-of-seven Stanley Cup championship series. The series, which has now become a best-of-five affair, is tied at one game apiece. “We used the defense Tuesday night when we won in overtime, and it worked well,” Abel said by phone Wednesday from the Detroit “hideout” at Toledo, Ohio. ‘‘We’ll continue to use it against Toronto until it proves ineffective.” But, Abel isn’t telling what the: defensive battle plan is. “It’s tough to explain,” he explained. ‘‘And, of course, we want the Leafs to decipher it themselves.
