And each other in the semi-fina- l Davis (probably more than Viewmont) wanted just that to happen and thus give the Darts a chance to avenge an loss they suffered to earlier the Vikings. So when Viewmont slipped by Clearfield and Davis dropped Weber in the first round on Tuesday, the stage was set and both teams knew they were in for a bruising affair. And the game was everything it was billed for plenty of scoring, intense board play, a vocal crowd (crowds like to be vocal at Davis) and of course the style of play both teams like to play. But in the end, the senerio was still the same as Viewmont beat the Darts for the second time at home With the win, Viewmont upped its record to an impressive 1 and should be a bonafide contender for top ranking six-poi- run-and-g- 79-6- 7-- state come January 9. Afterall, the Vikings have knocked off some pretty good teams (including Davis) who in turn have knocked off other good teams and so on. The Vikings also took first in the Box Elder Tournament last week and now find themselves in the final round of the Davis Classic against Provo. in the By PHIL KIRKWOOD Tournament Drama make the drama a little more intense, Provo just happens (at least when this article was written) to be the team in the state at only undefeated To 3-- After stopping Bountiful in on Tuesday and then'walking all over coon Wednesday, host Woods Cross the Bulldogs appear to be the best challenge for the Vikings so far this . year. We really want this game, said Viking coach Ron Johansen looking ahead to Provo. We want to give them their first loss and get back at them for beating us in the state tournament last year. Johansen admits Provo is every bit 7-- 66-4- 5 as good as its unblemished record indicates and that if the Bulldogs get any kind of a lead beating them will be tough. I havent seen any films of their games, but my scouts say that every time they go up by five or six points they go into the four corner stall, said Well have to make sure Johansen. that doesnt happen. One thing Johansen does have going for him is the return of junior forward Scott Maybe who is fresh out of a walking cast and saw brief action against Davis. lead I might put If we get a Scott in there with (John) White and play a tall zone, said the coach. Provo really only plays with four guards and a center and it would be interesting to see if they can shoot over that. 6-- 7 ten-poi- Its true that Provo doesnt boast as much size as Viewmont, but they do have Dave Heaton at center who plays like hes 9 and can score against any team. Heaton led all scorers against Woods Cross with 26 points and 10 rebounds. 6-- Scoring Machine Viewmont will hope to counter with a scoring machine of its own in the name of Norm Parrish. Parrish was nothing less than sensational against Davis as he scored a game high 36 points before coming out . midway in the fourth quarter. We had designed plays to get the ball to Parrish at the post, commented Johansen, referring to the offensive strategy against the Darts. He wasnt able to see as much action last time we played because of foul trouble, but this time he showed them what he could do. VIEWMONTS LEADING scorer Norm Parrish sends one home. VIKING GUARD Kyle Morrell grabs a tough rebound away, from Daviss Mike McGill. Morrells intense play has been one of the major reasons why Viewmont is 1 in the preseason. We had to stop him from handling the ball so much, said Johansen. He not only scores well but his passing is just super too and that was really hurting us in the first half. Parrish soars to tip in his own missed shot early in a tournament high 36 points to lead his team to scored Parrish half. the second staff Photos By Dan Miller its second victory over Davis this year.
