Show leiu. January 1,". 1981, I'agroR I.nkrsidr I ffietiyms IHIome to Hem's Welcome By PHIL KIRKWOOD Sports Editor hard to describe the feeling you get when shaking hands with someone who may be next years Heisman Trophy winner and is a sure bet to be drafted by the pros in the first round of the 1982 college draft. Its also difficult to describe the awe involved when meeting the number one quarterback in the country who personally rewrote the books this year by breaking no less than 31 NCAA records while leading his team to a 12-- 1 season and a victory over Southern Methodist University in the Holiday Bowl. He's a modest sort of guy, as superstars go. That is, hes not much for speaking in front of an audience (he lets his arm do most of that) and he didnt look too vested suit. He's comfortable wearing three-piecthe type of person who would probably favor a ham sandwich to caviar or a weekend fishing trip to night club extravaganza. This description may not be totally accurate, but thats his first impression. By the way, his name is Jim McMahon, BYUs junior quarterback sensation who just happened to play his high school ball at Roy. And last Friday, McMahon came home to be honored by his family, friends and fans for his outstanding performance this past season. McMahon, who graduated from Roy in 1977, led the Cougar squad to its fifth straight Western Athletic Conference title by throwing for over 4,000 yards and a nation leading 49 touchdowns. McMahon also led BYU to its first ever bowl victory with a miracle 5 victory over SMU. The win was Hail Mary" capped in the last seconds on a touchdown pass to tight end Clay Brown. At the luncheon and the rally that followed in the Roy High gym, McMahon was praised by his coaches (past and present) and his teammates who refered to him as not only a super player, but a super human being as well. His former prep coaches made reference to his uncanny ability to come through in clutch situations not only in football, but in basketball and baseball in which he also starred. Roy football coach Ernie Jacklin awarded McMahon his football jersey (number 9) in fond memory of his glory days on the Its ROY e, MCMAHON speaks to his fans in Roy gym. 46-4- Royal gridiron. The Roy City Council awarded McMahon a plaque and proclaimed Friday as Jim I McMahon Day. This is the second biggest thing that has ever happened to me," said McMahon to his fans in he . crowded gym. The biggest thing happened two ; weeks ago when we won the Holiday Bowl. . After the closing statements, McMahon was then swarmed by youngsters (and oldsters) hoping to get an autograph and a hand shake from their hero. And not one was disappointed as McMahon patiently. signed each and every program which is just one , more reason why he truly is a hero in life as well as ; ; on the field. , come-from-behi- Council and the Lakeside Review.
