Those ideas on success were among several presented, often with humorous illustrations, by James Bruff, western regional director for Max Factor, to members of the Layton Chamber of Commerce last week. As the Cheshire Cat told Alice in Wonderland, it doesnt much matter which road you take if you dont know where you want to go, Bruff said. Goals were a major part of Bruff s formula for in business and personal life. Luck and success brains, however, are very much overrated, he said, especially by those who are looking for an excuse for their own lack of success. Successful people are just lucky, right? Bruff asked. Sure, just ask any failure and hell tell you. Luck is just the ability to recognize opportunity when it appears, Bruff said. Is it that successful people have more brains? he asked again. Just look around you and youll see thats not true." We all have the same amount of brain matter 750 cubic centimeters, he said. g Bruff outlined the type of that leads to success. The goal must be specific, he said. Our internal mechanism doesnt respond well to generalities. If you want to make money, decide exactly how much and set a certain time limit for achieving that goal. Bruff also said the goals should call for some stretch, or demand some effort. Little bitty goals only help us achieve little bitty successes, he said. So what if we fail once in a while; every time you try, you gain knowledge and wisdom that help in achieving later on, he said. But, the goal should be attainable, because success then becomes a habit, Bruff explained. A couple of years ago, I could have decided to sit around and wait for the people in Rome to name me Pope, but I dont really think a Protestant kid from Brooklyn would really have had much of a chance, Bruff joked. Write the goal down on paper, Bruff advised. Write down your goal and tape it to your car windshield out in plain sight. Visualize yourself as having already achieved your goal, Bruff urged. The you have is vital.
