The Royals battled from a 13 point first half deficit to beat the Lancers The game had been billed on paper as no contest in, favor of the Royals. After all Roy was putting a 4 win-los- s record against 9 for Layton in preseason play, and the Royals were much taller and more seasoned. Apparently 78-6- 7-- the Lancers didnt believe in statistics, or maybe Roy did, because the fired-u- p bunch from Layton really took it to their guests, and almost blew them off the court in the first half. They had Roy down by 13 points with only a minute and took a nine remaining at half-timpoint lead to relish in the locker room. The Royals got their act together at halftime, and came roaring back to score the first six points of the second half. The teams traded baskets through the third quarter, but Layton still held a 5047 edge going into the final period. Roy, then, went on another rampage, scoring ten unanswered points in less than three minutes. The Royals moved out to a thirteen point bulge, with less than a minute to play, and coasted to an eleven point victory. e, Roy Wing at the Foul Line Roy edged the Lancers 27 to 26 on field goals and won big by converting 24 of 30 charity shots. 19 of those came in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter, when the Lancers were fighting desperately to get back in the game. Layton converted 15 of 21 from the line. Layne Sackett scored 24 points to lead all of the scoring, while teammate Jeff Pearce was getting 17 and David Barney, 16. For Roy, Bob Kirkwood converted 9 of 10 from the foul line and had 21 points. Brad McCaulley collected 15 and Steve Scholtec made 14 for Roy. Layton had no trouble with Roys n defense in the first half, and shot a blistering 64 percent from the field for sixteen minutes. The Lancers cooled off in the second half, hitting only 8 of 24 of their shots but finished the night with an even 50 percent. They were 71 percent effective from the foul line. The Royals shot 48 percent over the Layton zone defense, but corraled a lot k of points on baskets. They shot 80 percent from the stripe. Both coaches were cautious in a pregame interview. Laytons Doug Moon was fearful of Roys Big Three interior men, and conceded that he had no size to match with them. Roys Ted Smith was aware of Layne Sackett and his basketball magic. With the loss of leading scorer Arnold Mick McDowell and playmaker Durham, Coach Bruce Haroldson went the junior college route and came up with some fine talent to plug the holes. His top catch was John Maclin out y of JC in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Maclin averaged 26.9 points and 17.1 rebounds last year as a sophomore and had 1,350 points and over 800 rebounds during his two seasons. To fill the playmakers spot, Haroldson got Bethle Debnam, a 3 guard out of Northwest Community College in Powell, Wyoming. In only one season for NWCC, Debnam averaged 21 points per game and was the team floor general. Against Boise State on Saturday, the Wildcats came out gunning and when it was all over, they had established a new school record for FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE, hitting 33 of 48 shots for .690.
