Lakeside Cities Observe Fire Prevention Week KAYSVILLE October was 1981 Fire Prevention Week. Fire Prevention Week is observed by both the United States and Canada and' always includes Oct. 9. Several area fire departments held open house, including Roy, 5-- Clinton and Kaysville. This date is the anniversary of the great Chicago fire of 1871 that killed 250 people and destroyed $168 million worth of property. Fire prevention day was established in 1911 on the 40th anniversary of the Chicago fire. The first president to officially proclaim the day was Woodrow Wilson, in 1920. In observance of Fire Prevention Week the Kaysville Fire department held an open house. More than 500 children and adults toured the fire station and viewed the slide presentation. The department is made up of 30 volunteers. Twelve or 13 men respond to a daytime call, all 30 men can respond to an evening or night call. The firemen carry pagers now and are dispatched by the police department. They are ready to roll within two minutes. So far this year the department has responded to 80 incidents. Smokey the Bear accompanied the fire department to the Kaysville area schools. A timed fire drill was held at each school to determine the length of time to evacuate. The schools were then inspected for fire safety. The department is introducing a Learn Not to Burn program to the schools. Some classrooms are on a pilot program incorporating this program into their regular studies, such as math or history. The program has been tested by the National Fire Protection Agency, a nonprofit fire safety organization. The fire station, is equipped with ladder trucks and pumpers. There is a training room, g with a kitchen, table, and a pool table. There is a place for a sleeping area if ever needed. Fire Chief Jim Dotson said it takes just 10 minutes for a fire to reach 1,300 degrees. The department has a hose with a fog nozzle that is capable of putting out some fires with just 50 to 100 gallons of water. The department does inspections of public buildings and private homes. They check for flammables around pilot lights, storage areas . ping-pon- SMOKEY THE BEAR poses with a pair of Kaysville boys during his appearance in the city last week for Fire Prevention Week. If anyone would like to have a home fire inspection call or Chief Jim Dotson at The Clinton City Fire Department held open to celebrate Fire Prevention house Oct. Week. Many Cub Scout groups and interested citizens crowded into the fire house to see the equipment and hear lectures by the firemen. On Wednesday night the demonstration was interrupted by an actual fire, which gave the visitors an on the spot view of operations in the fire house. ' Cub Scout Pack 387 from Clinton 6th Ward visited on Tuesday night. Fire Chief Roy Brown introduced the firemen to the boys and their families and explained that the crew is all volunteer. He spoke about preventing fires and gave the boys a fire prevention checklist. Some of the things to check at home are: proper installation of wood stoves, proper functioning of furnace and water heater, frequent replacement of furnace filters, accumulation of rubbish in attic, basement, or garage. Captain Robert Sandman then spoke and pointed out that matches and smoking are the number one national cause of fires. Seventy percent of the fires in Clinton are caused by children playing with matches. Smoke inhalation is the number one cause of death. When we are sleeping our sense of smell is the first sense that we lose. For this reason smoke detectors are a must for every home. The number to call in reporting a fire in This is the Davis County Clinton is Sheriffs Department and they will reroute the call. A fire in Hooper this week pointed up the problem that many people have in that area in knowing where to call. If the fire is in the portion of Hooper that is in Davis County the number previously men tioned should be called and the Clinton Fire Department will respond. The Weber County district of Hooper should call Weber County, The fire department rounded out the weeks activities by speaking at Clinton Elementary School and sponsoring a poster contest. Awards were given at the school on Friday and the winning posters were put on display. eX $eyfryysyy, r 1 f, i, v ipu-.rir- ; I- vtt f i in,. ' fc. K , - I V |
