Show n Page IB Lakeside Review Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1981 BOUNTIFUL Signs of Christmas are popping up all over the city in the form of ads and store displays. It Seems these signs appeared even be- fore Thanksgiving. '' According to Norine Smith, at J & L Garden Center and Gift Shop in Bountiful, there is a very good reason for the early signs of Christmas. ::We want to provide ideas for our customers, says Mrs. Smith. A lot of p Mm Yule Spirit people enjoy using their hands and imaginations in creating the Christmas spirit in their homes. They come to the stores to browse and gather in hints and ideas to use on their trees, in their homes and as gifts. Customers also need ideas for the many bizaars and festivals held during the Christmas season. They want ideas early because alot of time is involved in some of the projects they choose, she said. There are many community minded functions concerning Christmas in the planning stages early, says Mrs. Smith, and they along with church groups and hospital auxiliaries come to us for assistance, needing ideas and suggestions for their activities and pro- jects. We try to accommodate our customers by having sale prices early in the holiday season and by setting up our displays to help spark the imagination," she says. A few people have frowned at the sight of our artificial tree displays which are all competely decorated around the theme of different Christmas carols even before Thanksgiving, but if someone wants to make some of the bows or ornaments for their own tree, then is the time to start. Making your own tree decorations is very worthwhile and also very time consuming, says Mrs. Smith. She made all of the decorations for each one of the aritificial trees and she began her project in July to have them completed in September. Because Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are so close together, we like to cover all three holidays at the same time and have ideas and displays set up for each holiday, says Mrs. Smith. Each fall the garden center sponsors several days of design classes. And each year there is a storeful of Christmas trees all trimmed for the holiday season. Every year the trees are trimmed around a theme. This year the theme is Christmas Songs. A variety of ma-tera- ls are used to trim the trees, spices, dolls, teddy bears and jingle bells. The center is a good place to get fresh ideas on how to trim the tree this year. For example, have you ever thought of tying a square of lace around a shiny ornament to make a one? Or very elegant how about a tree done in delicate pinks, decorated only with sprigs of mistletoe? There are other novel decoration ideas at the center also. You can build a Christmas tree out of teasels. The first ring of teasels are pushed stem end into a styrofoam round. Then each layer is glued on the ring below in a slightly smaller circle until the d tree ends with just one teasel at the top. Sprigs of artifical cherries or holly are added for color. Candles are always a welcome and practical gift. This time make the candle wax a fresh apricot color and pour it into a pretty jelly jar. Put a canning ring and lid e jar and decorate the top of the lid with little silk flowers or small artificial fruits. cone-shape- on-th- - CHRISTMAS at J & L TREE made of thistles is Garden Center. one of many items on display ARRANGING holiday items at the J & L Garden Center in Bountiful is Carol Smith.
