G3)dfi$HIl9d) gfpSSSGQQlB The outlook is favorable for Emery High Schools girls tennis team because of the experience and increased participation in the program. The Lady Spartans have five players returning who lettered last year. Seniors Mariah Oman and Melanie Allen along with junior Jennifer Lutu will play singles. Jensen and Coyne both lettered last year. In tennis, a team consists of three singles players and two doubles teams. A player improves her ranking on the team by beating a higher-rankemember, which gives everyone the chance to improve their standing. Emery had 22 players last year and Coach Tom Hansen encourages more girls to participate in the Spartans tennis program during the 2000-200- 1 season. Because of the nature of the sport, any girl can come play and learn and have a chance to improve. In order for Emery td win the region championship, the girls must beat North Sanpete High School, who has won the region every year since its inception. While the task of beating the championship team may prove difficult to accomplish, the Lady Spartans have a chance to achieve wins over the other tennis teams in the region Delta and Richfield. Emery loses key players The Spartan baseball program lost some key players, but Emery High School has a good foundation to build this years team. John P. Other returning Spartan baseball players are seniors Garrett Barton and DJ Cardan. Barton is an infielder and pitcher, while Card is an out- fielder. In addition, juniors Kent Stilson and Jeff Fielder, both infielders, will play for the Spartans.
