These lands are held in a legal trust for schools. Schools own 3.4 million acres. The lands are managed by the Castle Dale Elementary plans to bolster the writing and editing skills of students in its 4th and 5th grades through teacher and integration of land, gave lands to Utah schools School Trust Lands Administration and must, by law, be used to generate money for schools. The money is put in a permanent savings account, which is never spent, but invested. The interest earned now goes to each school in the state. Each school will get its share of the trust lands money because of a bill sponsored by Representative Kiel Brown and Senator David Steele, which passed the 1999 legislature and was signed by Governor Mike Leavitt. Emery County will receive approximately $33,000 to $37,000, to be distributed to the 10 schools in the county. Each school will receive approximately $12 per student. In order to be eligible for the money each school had to form a Trust Lands Committee to determine an educational need at the school and form a plan. The committee was to consist of educators and parents. If a PTA existed in the school the president was to be on the committee. The plan for each school had to be approved of by the school board. The Emery County schools plan to spend their allotments in the following ways: Book Cliff Elementary will use the funds to purchase books and materials for the four-bloc- k reading program, peer tutoring, and the Reading Counts Library. Canyon View Junior High will use the money to improve computer use skills of all students and provide an adequate com technology into the language arts programs throughout the school. Cleveland Elementary will bar code the tutor reading books into the computer in the library so they can be checked out as the students need them. This will enable teachers to keep better track of books read by any given student in their class. This process will give a big boost to the Tutor Reading Program, which helps more students in the school than any other program. Cottonwood Elementary will use the money in the area of Language Arts. They will also fund a peer tutoring program. This program will run under the direction of the teachers who have students involved, and will be administered by one of their trained teaching assistants. In the program school faculty would use upper grade students to help tutor primary grade students in reading. In the writing area they will purchase the Premier Agenda Program. This program has a writing component that give teachers ideas for student writing assignments built around helping the students build habits for success. The planner will also be used as a communication tool to keep students and parents informed of the progress the students are making. Each student will have a planner that the student and the teacher use to make contact with the parents. 4, The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is asking for volunteers to help with reading, math, spelling, etc., specifically at the Cleveland and Cottonwood Elementary Schools. If you are age 55 or older and able to help, please call the RSVP office at There is a mileage remibursement available to and from the school if needed. Emery High will create a writing lab to be administered by the language arts department for purpose of giving students access to w'ord processing. Ferron Elementary will work with faculty, staff, students, and parents to improve student performance in the areas of reading comprehension, wTiting conventions, and math application. for teachers Using and teaching assistants, involvement and information for parents, and improved instruction and increased performance expectations for students, they plan to improve performance on a variety of assessments. San Rafael Junior High will improve the technology capabilities of the school. The goal has two main points: to improve the technology literacy for all students, and improve the availability of state of the art computers to the students.
