Show mm 38 Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday February 27, 2001 Ideas for a literate environment By SUZANNE I. BARCHERS, Ed.D Parents can be a powerful force in their childs education by trying out some or all of the followingsug-gestion- s for creating a literate home environment. 1) Develop a home library containing books, magazines, and a dictionary. Find bargains at used book sales, garage sales, and discount houses. 2) Provide a good reading model. Readingwith your child may mean readingthe same book or cartoons or magazines to each other in turns or merely sharing the same couch while you read different materials. 3) Even if you share reading as above, and especially if you don't, always try to spend some time reading aloud to your child. See your childs teacher for good read-aJou- d books. Bedtime is a fine time for this quiet activity. An even better idea is to let your child clean up the kitchen while you read aloud from a favorite book. 4) Get a library card for your child and make regular visits. 5) Show the utility of reading by havingyour child look up numbers or addresses in the phone book, prepare recipes, or find the weather forecast in the newspaper. (!) For the younger child, read aloud billboards, street signs, and signs on buildings as you drive. 7) Subscribe to a childrens publication such as Weekly Reader or Ody ssey or Ranger Rick or browse through magazines at the public li- brary. 8) Leave notes for your children to read. If they are to come home after school before you, write out directions for special chores or privileges. Slip messages into sack lunches or pockets. 9) Teach children how to answer the phone, write messages, and politely ask a caller to repeat information (an intimidating request for a child). 10) Have children write thank you notes, letters, or messages. 1 1 ) Dictate your shopping list or memos for your child to write. 12) Fncourageyour child to keep a diary. A spiral notebook is adequate. 13) Take time to listen to your child. Set aside time to converse and find out what has happened in school. 14) Teach your child how to use a calculator and have him or her help with adding grocery prices, clothing costs, or estimating total bills.
